Using Technology to Earn Money While Getting Fit!

Many of us are probably done with our typical New Year’s resolution: to lose excess weight and get healthy…most likely we did not follow through. Many lose more momentum instead of weight by the time Día de los Reyes rolls around. Emerging technologies, such as various diet-tracking apps and Fitbit, have helped; sometimes more motivation is needed – how about earning money for every pound lost?!

HealthyWage, for example, provides cash incentives to address our nation’s obesity epidemic and improve America’s collective health. The company was founded in response to academic research that proves even small cash rewards triple the effectiveness of weight-loss programs, finding that people are more effective at losing weight when their own money is at risk. Since social networks play a large role in many lives, this will likely play a large role in reversing obesity. The company couples its popular individual and team-based weight loss contests and challenges that proffer substantial cash prizes (upwards of $10,000) with social and expert-based support, tools and resources, and goal-setting and tracking technologies to further bolster the success rate of its participants. On the HealthyWage website, a potential user just has to enter the amount of weight they wish to lose to get started and a “wager” estimate will appear. Social and expert-based support is also offered.

In addition, there are also a number of mobile apps that help to motivate and track your progress while earning rewards! Step-counting apps Pact and Charity Miles help you set up and keep various activity goals. Pact features food goals, as well, where the user also wagers their money in meeting/failing those goals; earn when goals are succeeded and lose when they aren’t. Charity Miles give you the chance to earn money for charity for all those walking and running workouts. Just choose a charity and go for a jog or a hike but not on the treadmill or stationary bike as the app tracks your phone’s GPS to record mileage. An app that can save you some money is Health4Me, which helps users find various health care providers and facilities in their area as well as comparing for common medical services.

With all that is out there to help us get healthy, and stay healthy, for the rest 2017 and beyond,  let’s choose wisely and stick to it!

Work out while You Work

Chances are you’ve heard several reports throughout the years that discuss the health risks associated with sitting down for long periods. One way to combat that problem and get some exercise in the process is to use a Walkstation. Basically, the Walkstation is a walking speed treadmill that’s integrated into a desk — allowing you to work and keep your body moving at the same time. Like a traditional treadmill, it also shows your progress on a console with the distance traveled, time, speed and calories burned. No suits please, we recomend throwing on some gym clothes. $4,199 — Steelcase

The Gamercize PC-Sport works like a little elliptical machine that you place under your desk, only it will hijack your mouse and keyboard when hooked up to a PC or laptop if it detects you are slowing down to unacceptable levels and lets you know that you need to keep moving to stay productive. Additional software can be included to help you keep track of your workouts. If you are anti multitasking, this may no be for you. $187 — Gamercize

There is an App for that One Night Stand

One Night Standard

For those that quickly need a hotel room because they crave spontaneity and indulge in late night, last minute sexual impulsiveness with a certain discreet someone then there is an app for that.

Yep, thanks to the app ‘One Night Standard’ you can quickly reserve a room for a quickie (or something like that) from the hours of 3 p.m. to 5 a.m. With the app, you can reserve rooms at any Standard Hotel locations, which are in New York, Miami Beach and Los Angeles.

But don’t just think you can use this app for inconspicuous activities. The app is also useful for those that need a place to crash because of a canceled flight, to drunk to drive home or because your baby momma kicked you out of the house.

Whatever the reason the free app on Android and Apple is now available with a $99 rate special until May 3, which is not bad considering the hotel’s trendy locations and the room’s high-end décor.

Shakira Partnering with Fisher-Price to Launch Toy Line

Shakira is partnering with Fisher-Price to launch a line of baby toys and a web series for moms. All of the proceeds will benefit her Barefoot Foundation, which provides education and nutrition to children of her native Colombia.

This November Shakira will release six products, including a bouncer that plays music, alphabet blocks and a musical soccer ball.

I saw how important developmental milestones are and how toys can help babies reach them — including with my own son,Shakira said in a statement. “I wanted to design a line of toys that stimulated development in the crucial early stages of life, the stages in which learning can be achieved through supervised play, fostering the development of psychological, social and motor skills.

She will be the first celebrity Fisher-Price has partnered with. But this is no surprise; Shakira is one of the most popular celebrities on social media. She is the first person to reach 100 million likes on Facebook and happens to be an awesome mother. The sexy Latina is currently pregnant and the mother of a 21-month-old cutie named Milan.

It’s about finding an authentic mom that is relevant to the millennial crowd,” said Geoff Walker, executive vice president of the Fisher-Price Global Brands Team

Support The Most Diagnosed Cancer in Latinas

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Latinas. Even though Latinas have lower breast cancer rates than white women, they are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, when the cancer is harder to treat.

As a reminder starting at age 40, women should have mammograms every 1-2 years. However, women at any age can request a mammogram based on family history and if you find any unusual bumps during self-examination.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I wanted to share some awesome products that are helping to raise funds and awareness.

You know you are Latino/a when_____?

PeopleEver do something that feels so normal to you, but to others it may just seem odd? Well, it just may be that you are doing something from your culture that only you would know about. Of course, this is not a bad thing, but rather, culture is around us every day and is what makes people unique and different and we have to embrace it in order to live in this ever changing world that we live in today.

So what makes culture so unique? It is because each culture has their own language, their own puns, if you will that only they will understand. Ever heard of the phrase, “You know you are_____ when?” Well, here are some Latino/a versions of that phrase right from ordinary people just like you.

Raul Santana from Bronx, NY—You know you are Latino when “the novellas come on, and you’re told to be quiet, have an irrational fear of wooden spoons, have more the 3 religious icons in your house, you think words sound better in Spanish and use a piñata at every holiday.”

Telma Gomez from Houston, TX—You know you are Latina when, “you know the meaning of “chancleta” or “el cinturón” but, more importantly, you know their implications.”

Anthony Rosa Bayonne, NJ—You know you are Latino when “even in the summer you wear socks with flip flops.”

Maria Ferrer Queens, NY—You know you are Latina when, “I can recite the menu for every Holiday party I’ll attend this season– pernil, arroz con gandules, pasteles y flan de quezo! Everybody makes the same thing and nobody minds!”

Manuel Melendez Sunnyside, NY—You know you are Latino when “family beach outings begin early in the morning by taking the subway with a shopping cart filled with pots of rice and beans, maybe a pernil and carne guisada!”

Judy Hernandez New Brunswick, NJ—You know you are Latina when “you take your Christmas tree down after Three Kings Day.”

As stated earlier, the world is becoming bicultural and the mixing of cultures is becoming more and more popular. Seeing different cultures mix only enriches a person and educates them about that culture beyond the textbook. It is about opening up to the world and seeing that even though we may be different, we still have ways about ourselves, the puns above, that are unique to every culture.

Tell us how you would finish the phrase (of course being appropriate), either on our Facebook wall or Tweet us @latintrends2010 and #IamLatinTRENDing.

The Stocking Stuffer Gift Guide—Non-traditional that is

Stocking StuffersTraditional stocking stuffers can have all kinds of things inside like gift cards, candy, small travel items, jewelry and even makeup. These stocking stuffers are great for any person in the family, but we have to admit that it becomes a little mundane every year of getting the same gift for people. Coming up with some new stocking stuffers ideas, especially if most people in the family have no idea what they want for Christmas, can become a challenge. Make it a goal this year to begin a new tradition and give some more non-traditional stocking stuffers.

It may sound strange, but here is something that children could actually get excited about when they are brushing their teeth. The toothbrush is called Brite Beatz from Brush Buddies and it features a synchronized light and music show while playing Jingle Bells, a classical holiday song. The time that dentists recommend to brush your teeth is two minutes. This gives a reminder to children to brush until the song is done. Other songs are from musicians like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. The toothbrushes with replaceable brush heads include a tongue and cheek cleaner and batteries that are replaceable while designed to help clean plaque in hard to reach places.

Also, available, are the Brush Buddies The Smurfs Talking toothbrushes. Once the belly button is pressed, the brush pops up and the bristles are gentle on children’s gums.

It sounds a bit strange to give an ornament as a gift mainly because there are plenty already on the Christmas tree. But more often, ornaments have become available and can be given out for the holidays. We are not talking about the traditional red, blue, gold, green and silver balls, but rather the non-traditional and more personable ones. These can include a photo of the family, a sled, cross stitched patterns, snowmen and countless of the many more designs to represent the person or family. Many stores sell these unique ornaments and there are plenty of how-to websites to make some of your own, without having to spend a lot.

Little books

Little books with simple phrases are not just for youngsters anymore. There are many books that offer inspirational sayings, jokes, and even prayers to get through difficult times. These books are simple, yet meaningful to someone that not only likes collecting books, but can also find them useful beyond the holidays. With many different topics and choices, this may be the small and perfect gift for that always ‘hard to give’ person on your list.

There are some many more things to put in the stockings and there may be some favorites that you do every year. But if you are looking for a way to break out of tradition and give something new, try these ideas. One of these stocking stuffers may become the new tradition in your family year after year.
