Kinky has come a long way, by fifteen years in fact, since they sent that infamous demo to the LAMC that won them the “LAMC Discovery Contest.” It started a fabulous run for these five artists who earned several Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations in a genre, alternative and electronica, that, though growing, still falls far behind the pop, Rock and Urban machines that is still mostly highlighted.
“Everything changes, some like to dance and have fun.”
Omar Gongoria explained,
“You have to change and move on.”
The album appeared to be a marketing strategy as well. But when approached about this, Omar Gongora disputed it.
“We were thinking different markets as in more ballads, expanding on our sound.”
Omar revealed,
“Our team did a very good job, there were a lot of sounds, fresh meat to throw to the wolves.”
This February 10th, Kinky will be releasing their new album in a way that is different for them, unplugged, with a nice support of star players including crew of stars including Carla Morrison, La Mala Rodríguez, Banda Los Recoditos, Voz de Mando and Grupo Pesado. They not only contribute to the album but will appear on the live “Kinky Unplugged” to premier in the U.S. hosted by Diego Luna on MTV tr3s one day before the release. “We wanted to do something special for the band.” Omar reflected,
“Its the right time for a live album, we want to break rules, take risks on a one shot show. It wanted a party so we invited our friends.”
Already they have a number one single, “A Donde Van los Muertos” with Carla Morrison, which debuted at the top spot in Mexico and MTV tr3s only a day before the release.
“We knew her, admired her work, and needed that voice.”
Omar said,
“It was Morrison’s signature song, it never happened before, a quick number one. We had a lot of critics because of how we changed, but we are happy about it.”
On this one occasion, Kinky wanted to be different, go out of their comfort zone, and reinvent themselves. And its a one time deal, as Omar suggested that they will return to the norm on the next album but on this occasion. Kinky is something else.
“Its a personal moment, a different way of thinking, and the most important album for the band.”
