Get to know April
In her new book, Your Voice, Your Choice, actress April Hernandez-Castillo recounts her personal experience growing up in crack-ridden inner-city America during the 80’s and 90’s in a Puerto Rican family (Bronx, NY – September 14, 2015) – In her new book, Your Voice, Your Choice, actress April Hernandez-Castillo recounts her personal experience growing up in crack-ridden inner-city America during the 80’s and 90’s in a Puerto Rican family, and being Latina. Although not privileged, her father’s strong messages to her about ethnic pride, heritage and his wish for his children to have better lives were instilled in her at a very young age.

However, her positive family upbringing and strong self-esteem were not enough to sway her from being sucked into an abusive relationship.  April courageously describes in chilling detail suffering unmentionable violence at the hands of her abusive boyfriend.  Ashamed and embarrassed, April hides the abuse for years, until…..

April’s true account of her struggles on the crack-ridden streets of the Bronx doesn’t compare to her first person account of teen dating violence and her struggle to break away. Your Voice, Your Choice is a lasting portrait of a young girl’s resilience and fight for her life.

There seems to be a misinterpretation about Teen Dating Violence, Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence in America when it comes to cultural and social understanding.  There is no discrimination when it comes to Domestic Violence. April’s hope is that Your Voice, Your Choice will encourage and give hope to those in abusive relationships and to help heal from invisible wounds, but most importantly bring awareness to Teen Dating Violence.   April is also a vocal activist and travels the United States and internationally speaking and empowering youth and women with her story.

About April Hernandez-Castillo:

Reaching critical heights in her portrayal of Eva Benitez in the award-winning movie, Freedom Writers, earned her recognition and critical acclaim confirming her status as one of the more talented up and coming actresses.  Now displaying the talent and drive to parlay success into a career as a respected actress, April garnered roles in the FOX pilot Blue Blood and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, CBS‘s Person of Interest, ER, 30 Rock and received a SAG Award nomination for her role as Officer Cira Manson in Showtime’s award winning drama Dexter, a role in J Anderson Mitchell’s sci- fi comedy Future Folk , guest-starred as Danny Pino’s sister on NBC’s drama Law & Order: SUV, and on 2 episodes of FOX’s hit show The Following.  You can also catch her recurring on the new show Feed the Beast on AMC starring David Shwimmer this spring.

Meet Ed Salas
Ed Salas entered the field of home health care more than three decades ago, providing services to the underserved minority communities in the New York metropolitan area. Through his experience, he has found a lack of culturally-oriented services being provided to these communities and has made this a benchmark in both the provision of services and training.

He is President and Founder of Salcare Home Health Services, Inc., providing professional and para-professional home care services to care for the sick and homebound. Salcare is a Licensed Home Care Services Agency (LHCSA), licensed by the State of New York Department of Health and is accredited by the Community Health Accreditation Program, Inc., (CHAP) an independent, not-for-profit, national accrediting body for community-based health care organizations.

brandpic7

For many years, Mr. Salas has maintained successful multi-lingual training programs in English, Spanish and Chinese.  These programs have been approved through the New York State Department of Health and, separately, the New York State Education Department.   Core training is provided to both private individuals and students referred by non-profit agencies, some at no cost to the student and is provided in the native language of the student.

Mr. Salas is responsible for Salcare’s growth in both the training and client care areas. He works extensively with community-based women and minority organizations throughout the five boroughs to provide needed home care services and training to these areas. He has also been working with the veteran communities in New York City. His efforts have helped to improve the general health, provided jobs and aided in the economic growth of these communities.

Highlights of Ed Salas’s community outreach leadership efforts throughout the metropolitan New York City area:

  • Co-chair of the Chinese Immigrant Services, Inc,, a non-profit organization providing services to aide members of the community with assimilation into American Life. Founder of their Latino Division and serves as Chair, helping to foster joint projects amongst the Latino and Chinese communities.
  • Member of the board of RAIN, Inc., a Bronx based organization providing home care and services to seniors and is co-Chair of their home care division
  • Founder of two groups: Latino Unidos de Flushing and The Statewide Association of Minority Businesses, which continues to foster Hispanic and Asian relations locally and on a statewide level.
  • Member of the Yonkers Hispanic Federation Chambers of Commerce, Inc
  • Serves on the board of RAICES, a Brooklyn based health and human services organization
  • 1992 to 1997, Member of Community Board 7, Flushing, Queens, and its health committee, the Board’s first Latino appointee

Romeo Santos launched his solo career in 2011, with the critically acclaimed “Formula Vol. 1”, which is Five times platinum and had five #1 hits (the first artist do to so in nearly 16 years). Romeo won the Billboard Award for the Latin Album of the year, MTV VMA Award as Best Latino Music Artist, 2 Premio Juventud Awards, 3 Latin Billboard Awards including Album of the Year, and was nominated for an Alma Award as Favorite Male Music Artist and an American Grammy for Best Tropical Album. His Formula Vol. 1 Tour was sold out domestically and internationally, visiting over 60 cities and 3 sold out shows at the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, with the production of a DVD reliving this moment in history, “The King Stays King”, on sale. In September 2013, Romeo and Johnny were invited to the White House again for the Musica Latina https://www.latintrends.com/meet-newarks-first-female-puerto-rican-police-chief/event in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

In February 2014, Romeo released his second solo album, Formula Vol. 2, has been awarded by RIAA with a Diamond certification and has won 3 Soberano Awards, 5 Premio Juventud Awards, 6 Premio lo Nuestro Awards, had a record-breaking 21 nominations for the Latin Billboard Awards in 2015, taking home 10 of them, and has won the 2015 American Billboard Award for Top Latin Artist. The first leg of his Formula Vol. 2 World Tour was sold out, including two historic nights at Yankee Stadium, making him the first Latin artist to ever headline and sell out a show at the world’s most prestigious ballpark joining the ranks of Madonna and Paul McCartney on the very short list of solo artists to ever achieve such a feat. And in 2015, Santos’ global appeal has reached an unparalleled level, selling out stadiums across the world from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, to Spain and across Europe. Romeo closed out his second sold-out leg of the Formula Vol. 2 World Tour with three sold-out nights at the Barclays Center, the first Latin artist to do so. The success of Marines’ work ethic can be measured by the Romeo Santos’ rapid growth, which continues to extend into new markets today, far from his humble South Bronx roots. Just this year, Johhny has sat on the “Hola, can you hear me” panel at the 2015 Latin Billboard Music conference and the Managers: The start of big business panel at the 2015 Revolt Music Conference, he also has been selected as a “Latin Power Player” by Billboard for being one of the 20 most influential people in Latin music. The feature article is scheduled to be in the August 2015 Billboard magazine.

Before entering the music business, Johnny was an NYPD sergeant. During his tenure as a police officer, which included the height of the crack epidemic in the 90s, Johnny made and assisted in more than 1,000 arrests. Throughout his career, Marines was awarded 12 Excellent Police Duty medals as well as 4 Meritorious Police Duty medals for 4 separate Bribery arrests.

Despite all of his success, Johnny Marines has not forgotten his humble roots he came from. Johnny has dedicated a large portion of his time, effort and resources to giving back to his community. In conjunction with Aventura, Marines has co-funded toy drives in New York and the Dominican Republic; he has donated turkeys for hundreds of needy families during the holidays; several times a year, Johnny and his mother ship barrels of food to the Dominican Republic and school supplies to low income families to provide them with the tools they need to focus and acquire a quality education; and he has helped coordinate Aventura’s hospital visits to sick children throughout the Metropolitan Area. Also, Johnny has helped to fund and to create a non-profit, Lower East Side Sports Academy, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan which recently partnered with the NYC Police Athletic League and has over 300 young people participating in its third season this summer.  Johnny is in the process of establishing the Johnny Marines Blessings Foundation, which is established to foster, support, and fund educational advancement initiatives within New York City.

More recently, Johnny has begun sharing his story. Johnny communicates how he came to be the manager of the most influential Latin American group and now solo artist of our generation. Johnny speaks sincerely of his struggles and mistakes not only growing up in the Lower East Side, but also of the impediments he has had to overcome once in the music industry.  Marines lectures on the importance of diligence and always putting your best work forward, and relays his messages in ways that people from all walks of life can relate. Johnny’s story is a true testament to the American Dream, that with hard work, dedication and motivation, anything truly is possible. Johnny has spoken on numerous occasions at Harvard, Columbia, Syracuse, Lehman College, and St. John’s University.

Have You Tried This Yet? Glaming Up the Everyday

I’m a sucker for a beauty product. Isn’t every woman? I don’t mean that to be sexist, but seriously, haven’t we all, at some point, purchased something because the bottle is cool, or the label is pretty?

But there’s also the stuff we have to buy because it’s a necessity: toiler paper, toothpaste, a Swiffer (yes, it’s necessary). Procter & Gamble is the mastermind manufacturing company behind most of the products in your home (you probably don’t even realize it); from Charmin toilet paper, to Pantene hair care, to the Swiffer, to the Crest White Stripes that have saved you a ton of money because they work just as well as a professional whitening job – P&G did it.

Well, now they’ve done something else – they launched the Have You Tried This Yet? campaign. Basically, they have taken the practical everyday product and glamed it up.

This past week I was lucky enough to attend an event for Have You Tried This Yet? at Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory. Verdi happens to be one of the campaign’s celebrity ambassadors, along with Vanessa Lachey and Latina stylist Irma Martinez. The “Trend Trio” was on hand to give a party of bloggers and media writers the inside scoop on how to take everyday products and make them just a little fancier and fun.

I’m a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl myself, and it was refreshing to be advised on style and beauty care I could easily integrate into my daily routine. Here’s are some fun tips and trends I learned:
Verdi broke down the advice on the fashion front: Black and white is never off the trend grid; it’s forever classic, and forever trendy. And it’s great for travel ‘cause you don’t have to think about how to coordinate it! He also reminded us: you can have fun with fabrics! Daring stripes and florals work if you work it, confidence is key. Need a Superman kind of quick change between work and play? An elegant clutch can spruce up an outfit, and don’t underestimate a good heel! And if you’re feeling sexy, wear a flirty tank under your blazer, and drop the blazer when you go to dinner. But the best advice he gave was to be natural, don’t overdue the make-up, and again, confidence and inner pretty will make all the difference.

Vanessa was a riot. She is as adorable as you imagine her to be. The new mom and wife candidly shared her OCD when it comes to toilet paper (Charmin Ultra Strong). What ever could I mean? It’s all in the details people! She likes to make the potty a little more welcoming, a little nicer, by folding the tip of the top sheet hotel-style (you know, with that little point that makes it easier to pull). She also gave a quick tutorial on the messy bun: it’s the perfect second day hairdo. Side note: Pantene’s Silky Moisture Whip + Moisturizer is a great product to keep hair manageable, silky, sexy, and it’s gives you the right amount of texture to create this hairstyle id you don’t want to wait another day. Back to the messy bun: take a section of hair right above each of your ears, and braid it; next, wrap the rest of your hair into a bun, then wrap the braids around the bun..and remember, if a piece of hair tumbles out, no worries, the messier the better! Again, I heeded her advice, have done it a few times since then (on those days you don’t want to wash your hair), and have received ton of compliments!

Last but not least, Irma Martinez suggested we keep our sheet sets organized by using a pillowcase to store the set. It keeps the lined closet organized and easy to maneuver around. So simple! Also, you can place a potpourri bag with a few Downy Unstopables In-Wash Scent Booster beads (because yep, you don’t have to use it in the wash!) and keep you sheets smelling clean and fresh!

The advice keeps going; this is just a snippet of the stuff they shared! It really was a blast, and not once did I feel like we were being sold anything. I went home with a bag of goodies to try out for myself. Stay tuned, I’ll be sure to give the real deal run down on everything!

Q&A

David Ochoa
1. The greatest impact of David’s childhood was his caring parents.
2. David’s experience growing up involved overcoming barriers and finding that every challenge was an opportunity.
3. The challenge David had to overcome a poor education.
4. His greatest influence in his career was others willing to help.
5. He hopes that he will continue to share and give more of himself.

Myrka Gonzalez
1. The greatest impact on my childhood has to be immigrating, leaving my entire world as I knew it behind. Everything that was familiar—except my parents—was gone: the warm climate, home, family, toys, clothes, familiar language all gone. This has topped all other experiences and actions in my life. It has also freed me to recognize that things are only that and that changes. Relocating and leaving everything behind for an opportunity.

2. My experience growing up was filled with loving and hardworking parents who instilled a love and the importance of family, culture, the appreciation of an education, and thankfulness for everything the United States made possible. This included having Spanish lessons every day before I could go out and play during the summer. I attended NYC public schools where I got an excellent education and which allowed me to take field trips to some of the greatest museums in the world, learn French from real Parisians and meet people from all over the world. I also saw bigotry, gang violence and poverty but that too was a learning experience.

3. The challenges I’ve had to overcome were language, culture, and ignorance.

4. My greatest positive influence in my life has been my family, colleagues, and friends who have recognized and encouraged my abilities. They have read my writings and have given honest criticism, suggestions, and support.

5. I hope that being recognized as a Latino Trendsetter will inspire me to finish and publish the stories I have started to write, to reach out to my new community in Naples Florida, and to keep faith with the motto “I can do anything if I want to badly enough.”

Q&A

1. Share the greatest impact of your childhood.

Growing up with an absent father and an alcoholic mother, the greatest impact in my life was my grandmother. She taught me to live my life by a set of values and provided the foundation I needed to have a prosperous and happy life. She taught me the value of hard work, discipline and ethics. I truly believe all the success I’ve had in my life is in direct correlation to the principles I learned from her. She was by far my biggest influence.

2. Define your experience growing up being Latino and being Latino in today’s world.

Growing up being Latino has been both a blessing and a challenge. Having being raised in such a rich culture provided me with a great set of values and allowed me to experience things that most people in America have never been exposed to. I have seen firsthand the struggles of living in a third world country and at the same time I have been labeled and looked down upon because of my name, background and accent. I learned early on that I had to work harder than most people to prove myself, which initially I saw as unfair but quickly learned it was something that I could use as motivation to work harder and improve myself in every way.

3. Tell us some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome.

Not having the typical background of coming to the US from South America, I quickly realized that I had to work twice as hard to make good impressions and have access to the opportunities that most people take for granted. Learning the language was a big challenge for me, in addition not having a degree from a typical US university proved to be a challenge when I started my career in advertising.

4. What would you say was the greatest positive influence on your career?

When I joined my first advertising agency I had a great mentor. I would say he was the greatest and positive influence. He taught me to embrace my differences and leverage my talents instead of trying to be like everyone else. I used to feel self-conscious about my accent, about my education background, etc. but I realized soon enough that those things didn’t matter.

5. As an honoree, what do you hope that being a trendsetter will inspire you to accomplish?

I hope my story and previous experiences can be an as inspiration for others who are where I was early on in my career. It seems overwhelming to think for someone who just moved to the US to think they can succeed in any area of their lives, I hope my story can help others have hope and to see that with hard work, discipline and a good attitude anything is possible.
