In her new book, Your Voice, Your Choice, actress April Hernandez-Castillo recounts her personal experience growing up in crack-ridden inner-city America during the 80’s and 90’s in a Puerto Rican family (Bronx, NY – September 14, 2015) – In her new book, Your Voice, Your Choice, actress April Hernandez-Castillo recounts her personal experience growing up in crack-ridden inner-city America during the 80’s and 90’s in a Puerto Rican family, and being Latina. Although not privileged, her father’s strong messages to her about ethnic pride, heritage and his wish for his children to have better lives were instilled in her at a very young age.
However, her positive family upbringing and strong self-esteem were not enough to sway her from being sucked into an abusive relationship. April courageously describes in chilling detail suffering unmentionable violence at the hands of her abusive boyfriend. Ashamed and embarrassed, April hides the abuse for years, until…..
April’s true account of her struggles on the crack-ridden streets of the Bronx doesn’t compare to her first person account of teen dating violence and her struggle to break away. Your Voice, Your Choice is a lasting portrait of a young girl’s resilience and fight for her life.
There seems to be a misinterpretation about Teen Dating Violence, Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence in America when it comes to cultural and social understanding. There is no discrimination when it comes to Domestic Violence. April’s hope is that Your Voice, Your Choice will encourage and give hope to those in abusive relationships and to help heal from invisible wounds, but most importantly bring awareness to Teen Dating Violence. April is also a vocal activist and travels the United States and internationally speaking and empowering youth and women with her story.
