Director JJ Abrams has revealed that he is in discussion with Benicio del Toro about a role in his upcoming “Star Trek” sequel. He did not disclose the specific role, but speculations are the Spanish actor will be playing a villain.
The movie would not be the first sci-fi flick del Toro participates in. The actor starred as a werewolf in the 2010 remake of the 1941 classic film “The Wolfman”. He recently became a father in August after Kimberly Stewart, Rod Stewart’s daughter, gave birth to their first child, Delilah Genoveva. The actor also acquired Spanish citizenship due to his celebrity and his Spanish ancestry in November.
Del Toro has a number of films of different genres under his belt, bringing many to acknowledge him as a versatile and seasoned professional in his trade. In a recent interview, Abrams stated, “He’s so versatile. He could sort of do anything.” Perhaps such drove the director to seek the star for his popular film series. He stated, “…I would love to work with him. I’ve wanted to work with him for years, and this felt like a good opportunity.”
“Star Trek 2” will be shot in 3D. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana will be reprising their previous roles in the film alongside del Toro. The movie is set to premiere on May 17, 2013.
