Back to School: The Dorm Essentials

by: LeAura Luciano

A student’s dorm room is truly their “home away from home” and making
it feel as comfortable as possible can help make the dorm experience
much more positive and productive. Generally, big box retailers only
focus on dorm product sales a few weeks a year, the website has created a specialty niche that caters to dorm room
essentials all year round – more than 1,400 items to choose from. The
products are hand selected to be useful and necessary for dorm rooms
and student living: from twin XL bedding and bathroom accessories to
rugs and wall decorations; space savers and organizers to security
products and much more.

I spoke with DormCo CEO and Founder Jeff
Gawronski about when he realized there was a need for a dorm product
website. “I came up with the idea when my original invention, The Bed
Post Shelf, was first rejected by the big box retailers,” says
Gawronski. “Big box stores aren’t interested in carrying more than a
few basics for back to college”. He says mass retailers are focused
on making a fast sale on dorm products then getting out as fast as
possible to focus on the upcoming holiday season. “My mission with was to take all the niche items like my Bed Post Shelf and
numerous other necessary products and put them into one complete, high
selection store specifically geared to dorm life essentials.”

Many people thought the current Miss Venezuela, Marelisa Gibson, had a good shot at this year’s title. She didn’t make the top 15, however.

Rima Fakih represented the United States, but didn’t advance to the top 15.

With fall creeping up, trust me it will be here before you know it, you will want to be prepared. Dresses are an easy way to transition into autumn. I recently previewed the Shumaq Fall 2010 Collection by Peruvian designer, Vanessa Barrantes, and saw beautiful dresses with romantic ruffles and vintage inspired pieces in deep, jewel tones. Available at Lola y Maria in LES and

FYI Look out for these dresses on Zooey Deschannel in her upcoming film with Paul Rudd, My Idiot Brother, debuting early next year. Remember you saw it here first!

PHOTO ROUNDUP: Piranha Premiere in Hollywood!

Yes, the movie looks absolutely hideous. But we suspect it’s one of those “it’s-so-bad-it’s-good” films.

We could be wrong, though.

In any event, though the movie looks terrible, these stars looked great at the premiere. Which dress is your favorite?

SNEAK PEEK: Jessica Alba does Cosmopolitan!

Tinseltown is abuzz with award predictions and fashion forecasts for the upcoming award show honoring television’s hottest stars. The biggest winners are often the must-have looks revealed on the red carpet – and sure to turn heads this year is nominee Sofia Vergara of ABC’s “Modern Family.”  Known for stealing the spotlight with her glamorous style and beautiful locks, Sofia is teaming up with hair care brand Suave Professionals®, known for salon-quality performance, to let America choose her red carpet hairstyle for the evening – and is taking one lucky person along for the ride.

Starting on August 16, fans can visit to review the three hairstyles in the running for the superstar’s exciting night and “Like the Look” that is their favorite. On the same site, viewers can also learn how to recreate Sofia’s fabulous styles by checking out step-by-step videos featuring “the making” of each look created by Jenny Cho with the Suave Professionals hair care line. Gisele Bundchen: Breastfeeding Controversy!

Her comments to UK Harper’s Bazaar caused a public outcry, and now Gisele Bundchen has gone into damage control.

The supermodel took to her blog to respond to criticism over her views that new mothers should be forced to breast feed for six months.

‘My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law’ the 30-year-old says.

‘It comes from my passion and beliefs about children.

‘Becoming a new mom has brought a lot of questions, I feel like I am in a constant search for answers on what might be the best for my child.’

The Brazilian model expresses regret over how her comments came across: ‘It’s unfortunate that in an interview sometimes things can seem so black and white.

‘I am sure if I would just be sitting talking about my experiences with other mothers, we would just be sharing opinions,’ she writes.

‘I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge.

‘I believe that bringing a life into this world is the single most important thing a person can undertake and it can also be the most challenging.

‘I think as mothers we are all just trying our best.’
