“He’s fighting to make sure people who were brought here as children have the opportunity to earn a path to citizenship and contribute to the country they know as home. That’s what this election is about and each one of us is responsible for the outcome in November.” In a 54 second video posted on the website Latinos.BarackObama.com, a site aimed at showing why members of the Latino community seek President Obama’s re-election, Desperate Housewives star and Mexican actress Eva Longoria shares with viewers why she is supporting President Barack Obama’s re-election in November.
While she is not shy about making her endorsement for President Obama public, Longoria is not shy about her disapproval of Republican candidate Mitt Romney. In a interview with the Hollywood Reporter Longoria expressed her views on Romney claiming he is, “on the wrong side of every issue that pertains to Latinos,” Longoria goes on to say how Romney saw the “SB 1070 a model law,” and called for it to be made into law for “the rest of the country.”
For those who are unfamiliar with SB 1070–or the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhood Act–it is a legislative act in the U.S state of Arizona and is known for its strictest anti-immigration counter measure against immigrants living in the United States. It is a legislative act which enables officers to question certain individuals they believe are immigrants. Many opponents against SB 1070 say it allows for racial profiling and a violation to civil rights of civilians from the Latino community. Proponents claim SB 1070 is just and takes action against a growing and unsolved problem in the country. Although signed into law by Jan Brewer on April 23, 2010 the Department of Justice asked for an injunction against enforcement of the law and won.
While Longoria makes light of Romney supporting SB 1070 she also highlighted how Romney tried to correct his statement regarding his support of it. Longoria notes how Romney tried to “clarify, saying he meant a certain aspect of it,” showing how he has a “flip-flopping nature.” Longoria also goes on to say that if Romney is voted into office Latinos can “stand to lose the most from his insistence on the Republicans’ same failed economic policy.”
In the interview Longoria adds how Latino community needs to know what Romney stands for since he’s said during campaign’s that, “he would veto the DREAM Act if it came across his desk,” and with a potential candidate saying he would veto a act that would support many Latinos means “you are not investing in the future of America.”
The DREAM act is a legislative proposal aimed at Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors–which creates the acronym DREAM–that would help Latino youth who have been living in the U.S but are not legal American citizens. Longoria was a heavy campaigner for wanting the proposal to get passed, unfortunately it was not.
