Eva Longoria is taking her talent to Hulu
Longoria is currently starring as Rudi Wilson, a former music executive from New York City struggling through the labyrinth of motherhood in the animated comedy, “Mother Up!”
The 13-episode show, which aired on Hulu last Wednesday, chronicles Rudi’s life as a mother of two now living suburbia and adjusting to the norms of her new environment. Rudi is a no-nonsense, brash executive who shoots from the hip but in her personal life, she is an incompetent, unaffectionate parent whose actions are perpetually motivated by her own self-interests. Longoria says, “I watch Family Guy and I watch American Dad! and you always see these really flawed fathers and the really perfect mom who is trying to hold the family together because the dads, they’re just idiots.” The show’s take on motherhood positions Rudi as a quasi-Peter Griffin type of character.
The former “Desperate Housewives” star and current producer on “Devious Maids” says, “People think that sometimes women aren’t funny. And in animation, specifically, everything you see is male-oriented. It is a large male audience watching animation,” she said. “But I don’t think there’s been anything women can watch that they can relate to and laugh at […] a character like Rudi is overdue.”
The cast also includes Jesse Camacho and Rebecca Husain as Dick and Apple, Rudi’s children; Gabrielle Miller and Cle Bennett as Rudi’s friends; and Helen Taylor as Rudi’s counterpart—the idyllic mom, Jenny.
This isn’t Longoria’s first foray into animation—earlier this year, Longoria voiced the character of Isabel on Fox’s “The Simpsons”.
“Mother Up!” airs on Hulu, with new episodes every Wednesday.
