Latin Grammy-winning Brazilian artist, Daniela Mercury will make her Best Buy Theater, NYC debut on October 7th with Canibália, her 11th International tour incorporating music from her sensational new release of the same name. Canibália is a daringly wide-ranging electronica-laced mix of pop, samba, bossa nova, reggae, axe, merengue, and salsa.
The concert will fuse music with Afro-Brazilian dance bringing asymmetrical movements and innovative contemporary dance mixed with the roots of Candomblé and Samba and re-mixed with the beats of electronic music. The spectacular performance will also include a special tribute to Carmen Miranda, rap, hip-hop, funk, salsa, rock and the Artist’s signature, samba-reggae, along with the influences of Daniela’s life and illustrious career.
“It will be a great celebration with much joy, spontaneity and dance, which is the artistic expression that led me to the stage and one of my greatest emotions. Dance is an important pillar of Canibália. I was inspired greatly by Martha Graham, who remains a strong reference for me, “says Daniela.
Canibália is much more than Mercury’s boldest and most radical new approach to Brazilian popular music. It is the creation of a movement intended to follow through from the birth of the Modernist Movement in Brazil and the internationally resonant movements of Tropicalia. By interweaving Brazil’s rich and vibrant cultural past with current and futuristic international trends, Mercury forges a new history and a new chapter in her career.
Mercury says, “Canibália is an embrace, a swallow of Tropicália, the Clube da Esquina and everything that has since been created in the arts in Brazil since the ‘Semana de 22’ [‘Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922 ’; the Week of Modern Art]. I yearn for the liberty that comes from this anthropophagic movement, from the Cannibalist Manifesto of Oswald de Andrade and its practice by Mario de Andrade, who said that these mixtures reinforce our Brazilian identity”.
In the past year alone, Daniela Mercury and has sold-out in over 20 cities worldwide, and has performed Canibália for over 7 million people. Mercury’s performances embody a beautiful and explosive celebration of the past, present and future of Latin music, and her remarkable artistry, energy and joyous sensuality transform every one of her concerts into an exhilarating night at Carnaval.
