Robert Sylvester Kelly (born January 8, 1967[1])
, best known by the stage name R. Kelly, is an American R&B singer, songwriter and record producer. Debuting in 1992 with the group Public Announcement, Kelly went solo in 1993 with the album 12 Play. He is known for a collection of hit singles including “Bump n’ Grind”, “I Believe I Can Fly”, “Gotham City”, “Ignition (Remix)”, “If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time”, “The World’s Greatest”, “I’m A Flirt”, and the hip-hopera “Trapped in the Closet”.
Kelly has written, produced, and remixed music for many artists including Charlie Wilson, The Winans, Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Sparkle, The Isley Brothers, JS, Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Mary J. Blige, Tamia, Hi-Five, Quincy Jones, Britney Spears, Kirk Franklin, K-ci & Jo Jo of Jodeci, Céline Dion, Charlie Wilson, Brian McKnight, Mariah Carey, Vanessa L. Williams, Blaque, Nivea, Joe, Ginuwine, Kelly Price, The Notorious BIG, Twista, Gerald Levert, Ruben Studdard, Maxwell, Changing Faces, Syleena Johnson, Tyrese, Chris Brown, Nick Cannon, Jennifer Lopez, among others.[2] [3]
In his personal life, Kelly has had several sex scandals. Reports surfaced that he allegedly married Aaliyah while she was still minor. In 2002, a video of a man purported to be him having sex with what was alleged to be an underage girl was released and Kelly was indicted on several counts of child pornography. After several delays, his case went to trial in 2008, with the jury ruling Kelly not guilty on all 14 counts.
