2015 Premios Billboard de la Musica Latina - Season 2015

The Latin market has a new award show coming October 8th in Los Angeles. The first ever Latin American Music Awards has arrived. Since these awards are done through fans who interact with music through various social platforms from streaming to airplay, its not surprising that an Urban artist leads the list of nominations.

Nicky Jam continues his career rebirth in style with six nominations which lead an impressive list of artists. Jam is still enjoying the run of “El Perdón ” which features Enrique Iglesias, who has five nominations of his own. Perdon is now enjoying its twenty-sixth week in the top spot, passing Shakira and Alexandro Sanz 2005 hit “La Tortura” for second longest running number one song.

Nicky’s response to the hit that reached the top spot on February 15th,

“I dont believe it yet. It’s hard to digest.”

Jam is up for artist of the year, favorite streaming song, and song of the year. J. Balvin, those famous snubbing of Donald Trump, launched him into mainstream news, is enjoying a classic year. Balvin is going for new artist of the year and favorite male artist- urban among others revolving around his hit “Ay Vamos.” Romeo Santos, Mana, and Calibre 50 have four each.

There is also a favorite crossover category where Demi Lovato is a contender while Selena Gomez is nominated for favorite dance song. This show, which will be presented by Telemundo, is modeled after the American Music Awards and should be quite a unique event.

    Year of the Pitbull

Pitbull is having an amazing 2015. The Cuban-American helped ring in the New Year as host for Fox Networks in Miami. The Florida born son of Cuban immigrants performed at the Calibash urban music festival in January and concluded a joint tour with Enrique Iglesias in February. By March, he sold out a show to a crowd of 75,000 peoople in Houston. This past Thursday at the Premios Juventud Awards, he won best urban artist and also got a chance to burn Donald Trump all in the same night.

Watch out for El Chapo,” said Pitbull.

Just recently he was added to the roster for Megaton at Madison Square Garden. His second Spanish-language album in five years, “Dale“,  was released on July 17,  and has 3 1/2 stars from Rolling Stone already.

It was time. We had a bunch of records we were sitting on. DJ Chino and Georgie basically produced pretty much all the album and we had amazing features. I said, why not? And our first record, ‘Piensas,’ went No. 1 with Gente De Zona. Bottom line it was just time,” said Pitbull.

On Sunday, July 26 he will also get a chance to help close out the Pan Am games. Dale, lets go!

The 2015 Latin Billboard Awards had big winners and big tributes last night at the Bank United Center in Miami, Florida. Romeo was the big winner as the artist of the year garnered ten trophies with Enrique Iglesias a close second with eight. We saw a Jennifer Lopez tribute to Selena which was well received. There were also great performance combinations of elite talent last night.

Romeo and the Bachata genre is red hot in the past few years. It was confirmed last night and as he sat on his throne during his performance it was quite apparent how far he has come in his solo career. Romeo was recognized in his title wins in the areas of songwriter, producer, as well as artist. His album was listed at the top as well. Among the artists he teamed up in projects recently he especially pointed out Marc Anthony.

“I had the great privilege of recording with a man I admire so much. More than an artist that I admire, he is like a brother to me. Thank you, Marc,”

Enrique, who owned the Latin pop, digital, streaming, and airplay among others was in quite an appreciative mood as “Bailando” which stood at #1 for 41 weeks on the Latin Hot charts collected a lot of hardware.

“I want to thank my fans for their support and love all these years,”

he said, holding his awards tightly.

“Thank you Miami. Thank you Latin America. Thank you Mexico. Thank you world!”

Selena, the Tejano singer who was killed twenty years ago, was honored by the woman who benefited greatly from playing her in the film “Selena” jump starting her career, Jennifer Lopez. She was joined by her family band, Los Dinos, including Selena widow, Chris Perez. Lopez does not deny the impact on her those many years ago.

“It was a great thing to have her teach me so much about how to navigate this business, but also how to navigate through life.”

Colombian Urban artist J Balvin left with three awards including “New Artist of the Year.” Along with Nicky Jam performance which marked his comeback into the spotlight and Wisin two wins, its obvious that Latin Urban music is still flourishing and evolving.

“It is a new era for urban music. Reggaeton is getting bigger than ever.” Balvin mentioned in his acceptance speech.

The tributes continued as Jenni Rivera won posthumous awards. Carlos Santana was given the “Spirit of Hope Award” award presented by Juanes who performed with him. He urged everyone to get in the spirit to do good things.

“I invite all of you to change the world with your own light,”

    said Santana.

“May the heavens open up and the angels bless each and every one with a deep awareness of your own light.”

Also honored with the Billboard’s Lifetime Achievement Award was the iconic Brazilian artist, Roberto Carlos, which was presented by Marc Anthony, a winner this evening as well. With these words Anthony summarized Carlos

“Tonight, this honor is given to a man with an admirable and moving voice, a true master whose talent has left forever a mark on the world of music and in our hearts.”

The performances were a highlight with J-Lo tribute, Romeo, Marc Anthony with Gente de Zona doing their thing and a special triple dose with Luis Fonsi, AfroJack, and Ne-Yo. Another three way set drove everyone from their seats was “Nota de Amor” with Wisin, Daddy Yankee, and Carlos Vives sharing the stage. Natalia Jimenez, crowned and all, was named “female artist of the year.” Ana Gabriel and Lucero also sang from a tribute album they worked on together.

The one moment of reflection through all the festivities was for the nation of Nepal, which is still recovering from the natural disaster that has taken over 6,000 lives.

“This is indeed a night of celebration, however we could not fail to mention the devastating earthquake that shook Nepal,”

    Fernandez said.

“Everyone can help remake this nation, donating to the International Red Cross with a click at www.redcross.org.”

    A Must-See @ MSG! What You Missed!

No rain or thunder was shutting down this Must-See event at MSG. The concert opened with the Colombian sensation ‘J Balvin‘ performing his hit ” 6:00 a.m.” Fans sang to the molody as they heard the notes of his guitar echoing through the theater.

J Balvin since his initial debut still remains on top of the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart of Billboard. He has earned the loyalty of thousands of fans in all the Spanish-speaking countries.

Then with an amazing entrance filled with lights, smoke and dancers, Pitbull put the crowd in an uproar performing his biggest hits, including ” Fireball “, ” Timber “, “I Know You Want Me ” and ” Hotel Room Service”.

But who stole the night was Enrique Iglesias with his heartthrob seductive performance on stage of “Bailamos” , “Hero”, “Tonight” and ” Be With You”.

Short time before the concert Enrique spent some personal time with fans introducing ‘Adrenaline’. His first fragrance inspired by his desire for more excitement, more pleasure and more fun. What an amazing combination of Sex & Love and Adrenaline. Perhaps an early stocking gift for Xmas, huh?

Eduardo Cabra Martinez, Rene Perez Joglar

The nominations are in for the 2014 Latin Grammy Awards are now known. The Latin Recording Academy announced the potential winners in the 15th edition of these awards. The MGM Grand Garden Arena will be the site, but the results will not stay in Vegas.

“In this, our 15th anniversary year, we received more than 10,000 entries and the nominations continue to reflect a dynamic and vibrant worldwide Latin music community of artists, producers, engineers, songwriters and everyone involved in the recording process.”

Leading the way in nominations this year with eleven is Eduardo Cabra of Calle 13, while the band has nine. Andres Castro has eight and Tom Coyne, a master engineer has seven.

The traditional big gunners are still factors with last year’s big winner, Carlos Vives, with six, among them, Song of the year. Enrique Iglesias “Bailando” in which he is partnered with Descemer Bueno, will compete for top song and five more himself.

Gabriel Abaroa Jr. shares the general outlook that the music is well represented this year. As an award show that shares power with industry people, it is good to see the expansion.

“The roster of multitalented nominees, it is reassuring that this peer-recognized award is truly focused on acknowledging the quality of material and excellence in recorded music and reflects the evolution

of not only our awards process but the growth of the organization in recognizing the best and most current representation of music.”

The finale award, Album of the Year will be strongly contested by ten artists including but not limited to Marc Anthony’s 3.0, Ruben Blades, Fonseca, Camila, and Calle 13’s Multiviral. Enrique Iglesias Sex! Sex! & More Sex!

When you think of Enrique Iglesias what crosses your mind? Hot and Steamy am I right? Well, that’s what crosses my mind. ;) When he’s on stage belting his lyrics with that sexy ‘mirada, Oh My! Oh My! Oh Dear! It makes me think he is dedicating those words to me for that brief moment.

A girl can dream can’t she? lol

Love and Sex are the perfect words to describe this Latin heartthrob. Why not make it the album title? Enrique has released hit after hit. Each one dedicated to his self expression of passion in many different positions.

‘Bialando’ has been rated the #1 in numerous charts and continues to break records. The hottest single of the Album ‘Sex And Love ‘, the second part of ‘ Euphoria’. Enrique’s sizzling recipe to combine in One album several songs with varous degrees of increased sensual passion and the consistency of rhythmic style is the perfect recipe for foreplay and air play.

As hard as it was for be to believe, i was told Enrique was skeptical to release such a sexual album. However, after a few nights of reminiscing of his past romantic singles it took no arm twisting to convince Enrique ‘Love And Sex’ was a history maker and barrier breaker.

‘Bailando’ became one of the 10 most downloaded songs on iTunes.

This phenomenon with over 100 million albums sold, has overcome criticism and questions over his artistic ability to express his form of love for the music and for the warmth and excitement of a partner. I definitely have no criticism. Express Away Enrique!!

Enrique is smart and sexy and in addition to have a great head of hair he has a great head on his shoulders. He prefers not to include alcohol in a night of passion. It causes problems under the covers, apparently liquor doesn’t make him feel in control. WHAT A FREAK!!

More Fun and more romantic when you remember what you did the next morning. lol!

Despite the eye candy he is to so many fans, Enrique states he’s not interested in casual encounters.

He’s made it clear his view on the double standard that is applied between women and men when judging their relationships.

“If a man lies with a lot of women , it is the best , but a girl does the same , its wrong?? Its not fair!

I personally thought he was a womanizer but he appears to be the whole package of hotness, humor and hero to defending women with double standards.

“… I honestly believe it’s difficult for love to survive without sex.” – Amen to that! lol

Jennifer Lopez: The Rebirth of a Diva

[Originally published in DTM Magazine Issue #18; May 2005].

If you go around asking people what they think of Jennifer Lopez, you will get opposing views about her. Where does one begin describing J.Lo and her impact on this generation of media fans, as the actress, the singer, the stage performer or the businesswoman? Controversy, gossip and stories always seem to follow her. Is she a role model or does she give Latinas a bad name? Many of us are quick to criticize her, but if one day we found ourselves in her shoes, would we be able to walk in them?

Much has been said about her curvas, way before her career took off with the release of Selena, in 1998. But besides her callipygian attributes, there is much more to this diva than what our eyes cannot overlook.

What makes her a pop star? With four albums released to date, including her latest Rebirth, and total sales of over 35 million, J.Lo, as other acts such as Enrique Iglesias and Britney Spears, proves that to be accepted as a pop star today, you don’t necessarily need to have a spectacular voice.

Most of us remember 2001 when J.Lo’s second album was number one on the chart in the same week as her hit movie, The Wedding Planner, was drawing crowds. Now J.Lo is back with another movie, Monster-in-Law, which premieres on May 13th. This movie is about Charlie, played by J.Lo, who finds the man of her dreams and a nightmare of a mother-in-law. Rebirth has gotten mixed reviews, but it’s J.Lo, so it’s not to worry.

This Latina icon will continue to surf the tabloids, whether it is due to a new marriage or an old divorce. Latin artists often release English and Spanish albums at the same time, but J.Lo coincidentally or not, tends to have a movie and an album released almost together, which is rare.

J.Lo has been able to do what many stars have not in mainstream media. She successfully switched from being a movie star to being a pop singer and vice-versa, without becoming categorized. Add her dancing expertise and her successful fashion enterprise, and you have a very confident and successful Latina.

At the recent Latin Billboard Awards, Lopez appeared happy with Marc Anthony, whom she married secretly last year. The couple still seemed to be in their honeymoon stage. Now that J.Lo has settled down, she may want children, but will the Salsa sensation be willing to father more children now, after having had three in two previous relationships? Sources say that arguments about this are taking place even as we speak.

J.Lo is either hated or loved by people, but no matter what is said, credit needs to be given to those who deserve it, and Jennifer Lopez has earned her fame. She always wanted to have it all, and worked hard to get to reach the heights. “Jenny from the block no longer rides on the 6.”

The media tend to bash her mostly because of her personal life rather than her career. She may seem like a hopeless romantic looking for “The One.” Has she found him this time? She said she was very much in love in all of her past relationships. Will this one stand the test of time?
