Last week the very sensitive subject of “catcalling” and “street harassment” has been the trending topic since a marketing agency – that specializes in making videos go viral – created a YouTube video of an attractive female walking the streets of New York City getting whistled at, followed and approached with ‘hey mama’, ‘you look beautiful’ and ‘hey sexy’ among other comments.
Hollaback!, the organization that promises to “end street harassment” and the marketing company, Rob Bliss Creative, created the video titled “10 Hours Walking in NYC as a Woman”. However, the woman walking was white and the only place the video depicted her walking were mostly in black and Latino neighborhoods. The crazy thing is that the title of the video says, “ 10 hours walking in NYC”. Ummm, NYC looks like the ghetto and where are the white men?
The publication Jezebel created a response video, “Women of Color Street Harassment”, to showcase that not only white women get “catcalled” but women of color do too. The video also says that most of these catcalling “predators” are white men, which is not seen in the other video. “It gives the impression that the only predators in New York are men of color and that’s false,” says Thanu, a female in the video.
Bliss, who created the video, wrote on Reddit, “we got a fair amount of white guys, but for whatever reason, a lot of what they said was in passing, or off camera”. Really Mr. Bliss? Well, then why was the majority of your video filmed in the hood when your title states “NYC”?
The website Mass Appeal created a chart illustrating the video’s locations. For some odd reason (after walking for 10 hours) none of those shots were in Wall Street. But the majority of the shots were in Harlem (59 percent) and Times Square (22 percent). The website states that according to their charts “this film focused almost exclusively on a small radius in Harlem and a small radius near Times Square”.
Unfortunately, places like Tribeca, Upper East Side or Flatiron District (where the filthy rich live in NYC) were probably too noisy to hear the white man’s catcall.
