Merlin Santana was a promising Afro-Latino actor who gained fame for his roles in TV shows and movies in the late 1990s. Born on March 14, 1976, in Washington Heights New York City to parents from the Dominican Republic. Santana began his acting career at the age of three in a commercial for a fast-food chain.
Santana’s breakthrough role came in 1991 when he played the character of Stanley in the movie “New Jack City.” He then appeared in a series of TV shows such as “The Cosby Show,” “Family Matters,” and “Moesha,” where he portrayed characters that challenged stereotypes about Black and Latino people. Santana’s performances were praised for their authenticity and sensitivity.
He became a role model for many young people of color. However, Santana’s success was not without its challenges. He struggled with the pressure to conform to Hollywood’s beauty standards and faced discrimination because of his race and ethnicity.
He also battled addiction and substance abuse, which affected his personal and professional life. On November 9, 2002, Merlin Santana’s life was cut short when he was fatally shot while sitting in the passenger seat of a car in Los Angeles.
The 26-year-old actor was returning from a nightclub with a friend and fellow actor Brandon Adams when the suspect Andre Gaines fired a shot into the car’s passenger side where Santana was sitting and the bullet struck him in the head, he was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
The news of Santana’s death shocked the entertainment industry and his fans, who mourned the loss of a talented actor and a compassionate human being. On November 18, 2002, Merlin Santana, age 26, was buried on November 18, 2022 in The Bronx.
His Killers:
In 2003, Gates was convicted of the first-degree murder for killing Merlin Santana and the attempted murder of Adams. He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences plus 70 years in prison.
Brandon Douglas Bynes, the other suspect during the shooting, received a 23-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon.
The police involved in the case testified that Monique King, reportedly Gates’s girlfriend, only aged 15 at the time, falsely claimed that Santana made sexual advances towards her which prompted the Gates’ and Bynes’ attack.
In January 2004, King was found guilty of second-degree murder and attempted murder but was acquitted on two murder charges, receiving ten years in juvenile custody as a result of Santana’s death.
Many people criticized the media’s coverage of Santana’s death, which focused on his alleged involvement in gang activities and perpetuated harmful stereotypes about Black and Latino people. Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Merlin Santana’s legacy lives on.
