Bad Bunny, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has been casted to join Marvel Universe for an El Muerto film by Sony pictures. The 28-year old Latin Grammy Award winner will star as El Muerto, the film will be released in January, 2024.
Bad Bunny first ventured into acting with a role in Narcos: Mexico as Kitty. The Puerto Rican artist has now gotten the role of a lifetime: he’ll star in his own Marvel movie from Sony Pictures as El Muerto.
“To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible,” Bad Bunny said when he broke the news at CinemaCon.
He will play a wrestler who battled Spider-Man in the past. Spider-Man rescued El Muerto in the hospital when El Dorado took him captive and claimed his life. El Muerto was saved by Spider-Man and the two would eventually team up to defeat El Dorado.
This is a historic moment, as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio will become the first Latino to lead a Marvel movie. It’s also the first time there is a live-action Marvel film that focuses on a Latino character. (Animated Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was the first to feature a Latino protagonist, introducing Miles Morales.)
This role actually makes sense for the bunny man, as he’s a huge wrestling fan and has wrestling experience, as well. El Muerto, whose real name is Juan Carlos Sanchez, is a masked wrestler whose mask gives him supernatural strength and endurance. He was first introduced in the comics on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Vol. 1 #6, where he faces off in the ring against Spider-Man for a charity match.
