Are you tired of looking and applying for jobs and not hearing from companies? Are you tired of receiving the email response of ‘thank you for interest, but we have chosen somebody else’, without even getting an interview?
Well take a break from the job hunting for a few days and try one of these fun and different things to do that will help you get out of the house and bring up your spirits. Here is a list of things around the boroughs of New York to try out. One of them may just become a new thing you try out all the time, you never know until you try.
Play Online Games
Without leaving the comfort of your home, play online games to get your mind critically thinking about the puzzle. One common online site is Game Show Network or GSN at www.gsn.com. Here, many of the games can be played for free and they are marked with oodles or “fun points”. While some of the games, you can compete for cash prizes, these free ones will get your mind going on something fun and challenging.
Competitions
If you have writing talent, then try entering a competition that does just that. You never know, you may just win a prize of any kind like cash, publication, or recognition for your work. There are several large and small organizations that hold contests monthly, some annually that are available. Some top ones are Writer’s Digest Competition and Poets and Writers. In contrast, some smaller competitions can be local magazines, or other non-profit organizations. Some of the competitions are free to enter, while others do cost some to keep the publication going. Whatever your writing passion is, there would be a contest out there somewhere for you to try out. Here are a few tips when entering the competitions:
1. Go directly to the website as opposed to a general site like about.com.
2. Make sure you read all the rules and guidelines to not easily get disqualified.
3. Write about what you know and do not try to sound smarter than you really are.
4. Have fun and keep entering for each one you like, there is no down side, expect that you may have not been picked.
Festivals
What better thing to do than to spend a day outside enjoying the fresh air and having fun at a local festival. Like street markets, these may be announced or unannounced. Union square is one place where a lot of festivals and street markets happen. Walk around with some friends or by yourself; pick up a ‘just because’ gift for someone, or try new foods or dance.
Restaurants
While your budget may be tight, try going out to eat either by yourself or with some friends at different place other than your usual hangout. Experiencing a different kind of restaurant will offer great conversation, great food and maybe even a new hangout place for all to enjoy.
Other Fun Ideas
Here are few websites that you could consider as well. Remember, there are five boroughs to explore, not just good old Manhattan.
