There is only one word that can describe the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash, Epic. The Music Academy Culture Clash is a music event that happens once a year. It is a celebration of sound system culture and its ongoing influence on hip hop, Spanish and dancehall music. Miss Info of Hot 97 hosted the event that showcased the skills of some of the best DJ’s in the game. Miss Info provided the crowd with the right energy for the musical battle that was about to go down.
“Are you guys ready!” Miss Info yelled to a sea of music lovers. The crowd was pumped up when Max Glazer with Kenny Meez came out and a surprise guest appearance from Freeway. Back to back a new act would bless the stage from Trouble & Bass,to Young Guru and Just Blaze, the man behind countless hits from Jay-Z, Drake, to the lyrical Kendrick Lamar. One of the acts that stood out most for me were Que Bajo?! as they mixed Elvis Crespo to house music. They are known for blending Latin-fueled sounds to create a new style. Que Bajo?! puts rich Latin heritage into every show they do.
The whole concept of DJ’s battling reminded me of New York City in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It was real hip-hop, raw, competitive and just fun. Everyone at the Red Bull Culture Clash Event were enjoying this night of music appreciation. The battle started off with a freestyle. The Crews played whatever they want. Round 2 was the selector round where the Crews are judged on there choice of track selection and overall presentation. On round 3 the Crews switch and play there opponent’s style of music. The crowning of the champion were decide by the audience. Whoever received the most noise won the competition.
The night was full of guest appearances. When Just Blaze was preforming he surprised everyone when he invited Philly rapper Freeway to the stage. Freeway is one of the most influential rappers that has come out of Philadelphia and is mostly known for his time at Rocafella Records in the 90’s. Even though the whole night was a battle of sound vs sound, the audience were the true winners. For more information on Red Bull events go to RedBull.com
