Actress and singer Demi Lovato took to twitter to call her former employer, Disney Channel, out for their take on eating disorders in the network’s series “Shake It Up”.
In the seventh episode of the series’ first season, a model tells one of the protagonists, “I could just eat you up, well, if I ate.” In response to the joke, an upset Lovato tweeted, “…What are we promoting here? #notfunnyATALL.” She later commented, “I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make jokes about that very disease…#nice.”
The network took no time to respond to the singer/actress’ tweets, writing, “We hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible &reevaluating them. It’s NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!” Fans still expressed anger over the issue. Lovato referenced prior Disney shows to make a point of the shrinking figures of its actor’s today, tweeting, “And is it just me or are the actress’ getting THINNER AND THINNER…. I miss the days of RAVEN, and LIZZIE MCGUIRE.”
The star, who was admitted to a rehabilitation facility for anorexia and bulimia after having a nervous breakdown, has reportedly remained healthy since her release. Lovato recently returned to the treatment center as an inspirational speaker for women struggling with eating disorders.
