This December a cover of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero’s Home made a
single father and his daughter an internet sensation. Jorge Narvaez, a single
father of two who’s working his way through college, gained internet notoriety
in December when he and his 6-year-old daughter, Alexa, posted a video on
Youtube of the two singing a duet which has been viewed by 4 million.
According to the post’s description, it was 11:00pm and after 9 or 10 practices
of the song Jorge and Alexa decided to finally record the two singing. Jorge
writes that, “on the last try, she yawns and couldn’t wait to go to sleep! And
so did!” Since pressing the upload button the father and daughter singing pair
has been viewed by millions and continue to get recognize.
Recently the pair appeared on Ellen DeGeneres talk show Ellen to perform the
song that made them over night internet sensations. During a brief interview
with DeGeneres, tells Ellen that in his household there are, “four guidelines:
family, community, art, and music. And with music we like to express it by just
sitting down and having a good time before we go to sleep and we just play music
together, it’s all about having a good time.”
When asked by Ellen if he expected the attention the video post received, Jorge
humbly admitted that, “we didn’t expect it but we are really happy that it
reached so many people.” On their facebook page, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic
Zeros posted and responded to the cover made by Jorge and Alexa by stating the
video is, “beautiful in every way.”
Aside from Jorge being a single father to two little girls, he’s
also a college student at the University of California, San Diego partaking in
Ethnic Studies, Visual Arts, Literature and International Migration Studies.
Along with his busy schedule as a father and student, Jorge is also a musician
and photographer by trade. Well let’s hope Jorge continues to rise in 2011 and
be the awesome Dad he is so far.
