Berto Colón, one of the most handsome villains on television today comes directly from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Colón is part of the cast of Netflix “Orange Is The New Black,” giving life to Cesar, a drug dealer, a womanizer and manipulator. Cesar is responsible for sending Aleida (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and Dayanara (Dasha Polanco) to jail and a few more things but we won’t spoil it for you.
The Character of Cesar could not be more of a departure from Colón, the person, who is a sweet and friendly young actor who keeps smiling and joking throughout the interview with LatinTrends.
“The only resemblance between Cesar and me is aggressiveness, he constantly hustles and waits for no one but obviously the moral resources he uses are very different from mine,” Colon says.
Berto came to the mainland as a teenager and earned a scholarship to play football at Fordham University in the Bronx. In the last two years of his collegiate career, he found his true calling: the love of acting, and began taking classes about video, editing and acting. With an immense desire to act yet without the slightest idea of how to enter this intimidating world or get an agent, Colón auditioned repeatedly without much success. Eventually he landed roles in popular soap operas such as “One Life To Live” and “All My Children” until he landed the role that changed the course of his career,
“Auditioning for OITNB was an audition like any other, never ever, none of the actors thought that this was going to be so big ” he says.
This handsome 42 –year-old Boricua does not allow success and fame to go to his head and knows that his main role in life is that of husband and father of two beautiful girls. Humble, cheerful and spontaneous, Colón still keeps his day job as bartender at the W Hotel in Hoboken, NJ.
“Most people who come to the hotel recognize me from the show, so I hope this helps me get better tips”, he laughs, as he takes a sip of coffee.
Ambitious by nature, Colón says he does not need to be famous. He just wants to satisfy his passion for art and provide his family a comfortable future. Tall, fit, with green and expressive eyes, the actor admits that the hardest thing about this career is to create family balance or “tambaleo mental” as he calls the art of finding enough time for family and career.
With many plans for the future, a new role in the HBO series “Show Me A Hero” and a bigger participation in season 4 of OITNB to be released in the summer of 2016, Berto Colon promises to be the sexiest bad guy on TV.
