Hispanic or Latino? Understanding the Difference and How to Address the Community
The terms Hispanic and Latino are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings and origins. It’s essential to understand the difference and what members of this cultural group prefer to be called. Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish or are descendants of Spanish-speaking Countries like Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and The Caribbean.
The U.S. government created the term in the 1970s to classify people with a common language and culture. It’s based on the word “Hispania,” the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Spain and Portugal. On the other hand, Latino refers to people from Latin America, which includes countries where Romance languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, and French are spoken.
The media created this term in the 1990s as a more inclusive word to describe people with cultural roots in Latin America, including Brazil, which is not a Spanish-speaking country. Some may prefer to be called Hispanic, while others may prefer Latino or their country of origin.
Using the wrong term may be seen as insensitive or disrespectful. It’s important to note that only some from a Spanish-speaking countries identify as Hispanic, and not everyone from Latin America identifies as Latino. Some people prefer to be recognized by their country of origin, such as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, etc., and some prefer to be addressed simply as Americans.
In recent years, there has been a growing movement to use the term Latinx as a gender-neutral alternative to Latino or Latina. However, this term is still not widely accepted among members of the community, and some see it as an imposition on non-Latinx individuals who are unfamiliar with the culture and language.
