La Fundacion Folklorica Cultural Rafael Cepeda is an organization that is dedicated to the life, the art and the thoughts of Rafael Cepeda. The foundation was established to maintain Puerto Rico’s folkloric music alive so that the future generations could enjoy and understand themselves and their future. Headed by Jesus Cepeda, the son of Rafael Cepeda, Bomba and Plena is still alive in the hearts of Puerto Rico.
Jesus Cepeda y su Grupo ABC release their latest album ‘De la Raiz a la Salsa, La Bomba y La Plena’ just in time for November, which is Puerto Rican Heritage month. Keeping up with their tradition of bringing the oldest music that Puerto Rico has to offer to a new audience is something that Jesus Cepeda has been doing ever since “El Patriarca de la Bomba y Plena”, Rafael Cepeda, was alive.
LT-Do you think that Bomba is only folk music or that it could be considered Pop music today?
JC-We have two levels of Bomba y Plena, we have the folk music and then we have the popular music. My new album utilizes Bomba in a modern pop version.
LT-How has the music change since the time of Ismael Rivera and Fania?
JC-Nowadays Bomba is not played on the radio as much, but there are a lot more Bomba groups out there and there are more means of showing the music, like the Internet. A lot of young kids are supporting the music now.
LT-What does this album signifies to you?
JC-This is a big contribution to Puerto Rican Folk music.
LT-What do you see in the future of La Fundacion Rafael Cepeda?
JC-I see the album having a huge success and La Fundacion maintaining the oldest music that Puerto Rico has, Bomba, alive.
