No doubt Francisco Rodriguez already deeply regretted last week’s scuffle with the grandfather of his children.
Now he’s really going to wish he could run the film backward and find a better way to comport himself. And so will his accountant and his family.
The Mets are looking into an attempt to void his contract on the grounds that his season-ending thumb injury was not baseball-related, Sports Illustrated reports. K-Rod’s salary is $11.5 million in 2010 and the same in 2011. He has a $17.5 million option for 2012 with a $3.5 million buyout.
Once the players’ union joins the fray, though, it will no doubt point out that the Mets initially suspended Rodriguez for only two games and examined the contract angle only after it came out that he was injured.
Regardless, there could be more than a little tension around that Thanksgiving table – if K-Rod gets court permission by then to see his girlfriend and their twins.
