Cuban-American and Miami Native, Kat Dahlia, has released her mixtape ‘Seeds’ which features five brand new tracks plus a bonus track on soundcloud to hold fans over until her official debut album ‘My Garden’ by Vested In Culture/Epic Records drops in early 2014.
The mixtape is a solid introduction to Kat Dahlia’s Latin, Cuban, hip-hop, urban-reggae flare and alternative rock-pop sounds with her distinct vocals that are a sultry concoction of Katy Perry meets Erykah Badu and Rihanna mixed into one… which pulled me in deep. I couldn’t get enough, every song on this mixtape is different, some hip-hop, some reggae based, others rock-pop and yes all oh so, so yummy and I am hungry for more! If this is what her mixtape sounds like I can’t wait until her album drops!
The 23-year-old was raised by Cuban-born parents in Miami Beach. Kat’s parents emigrated to the U.S. as children and their island culture carried over into the language and salsa music that was fundamental to her upbringing, as Celia Cruz, Tito Puente and Willies sounds came through the air in her abuela’s kitchen.
Kat Dahlia is quoted on her Facebook ‘About’ page stating:
“I always knew I wanted to do music. I just didn’t know how I was going to get there.” (At 15, she started writing her own songs) “I would rip instrumentals from YouTube to make songs because I didn’t have a producer or a band.”
“There’s no other way to stand out than just being yourself,” she says. “I write my own music. People say my voice is very unique and I do this rappy thing that’s kind of different, but if you really want to break it down, I’m just being myself.”
