Stage 48 was once again the site of the Latin Mixx DJ Choice Awards, the 10th edition as the premier awards event for Dj’s has come round circle. This event, borne out of the idea of a man, Jason “DJ Threat” Campbell who passed before its birth, has become indirectly a yearly coming together of various genres in the Latin market. Kevin “Pilz” Montano, who took the reins from there knew one thing. No matter the type of Latin music, the DJ is tied to it in some form or fashion.

The men who were to be honored this time around have either hosted or seen others honored over the years. Some came as a surprise while others made sense from the start. Some were performers, others producers of elite talent over two decades, while others were architects of the business. Comedy was the chosen form of entertainment tonight headlined by Ruperto Vanderpool and Room 28. A special turntable tribute called “I am DJ” was conducted by DJ’s Cre-8,Spin One, Finesse, DP-1, and Danny S.

The show was centered around the pioneers of the business. Porfirio Pina, who unfortunately was not present, was presented with one of the Trailblazer Awards. The Veteran industry man has influenced just about everything in the Latin music industry. He was often not seen but definitely heard. The VP of Universal Music Latin Entertainment and Machete Records founder Gus Lopez ushered in an impressive roster of Latin Urban talent that defined the “Reggaeton Era.”

Alex Sensation is not only a DJ, host, and performer, but now is an Icon. It says so on the LMX Icon Award, heavy and large enough to hang on a single wall in most houses. Sal Abbatiello, the Founder of Fever Records and power behind the acts of the late 70’s and early 80’s that dominated Hip and Hop and created the Freestyle Music Era. He was joined by Speedy and his artists George Lamond, K7, Suave, and Judy Torres, who presented him with the recognition he long deserves.

Finally we had the Mixx Cares Humanitarian Award that was given over by Fat Joe, a former recipient, to Slick Rick. Rick as artist, Hip-Hop Pioneer, is not often known for his humanitarian efforts but it was recognized this evening.

The winning DJ’s and the men behind the music were a fitting close to a decade of the Deejay.
