If you’re looking for a weekly dose of entertainment, dramatics and uplifting stories then look no further. MTV premieres the new docu-series “Washington Heights” with two back-to-back episodes this Wednesday at 10pm. The 11 episode, hour-long series is set in New York’s gritty neighborhood of Washington Heights where a group of best friends struggle to follow their dreams. The nine primarily Dominican friends in their early 20’s fight to pursue their dreams in fashion, music, acting, poetry, and sports while dealing with the daily challenges that stand in their way. The close-knit friends include Jonathan Perez (JP) “Audobon”, the backbone of the group and aspiring Hip Hop artist, Reyna, the outgoing aspiring singer, Frankie, the poet and aspiring English professor, Ludwin the artist, Jimmy the aspiring professional baseball player, Eliza Jimmy’s girlfriend and aspiring fashion designer, Rico, the actor/model, Fred, Rico’s younger brother who wants to work in the fashion industry and Taylor, the voice of reason.
I for one am super excited for this series because I know it will represent Latinos in a positive way and negate stereotypes we endure. I had the chance to interview two of the cast members JP and Reyna, which you can check out in our January issue of LatinTRENDS magazine. “Washington Heights” premieres on Jan. 9 at 10pm on MTV.
