This Saturday July 26th, at Madison Square Garden, the co-main event to Golovkin-Geale will present a heavyweight title eliminator between Cuba’s Mike “The Rebel” Perez, (20-0-1, 12 KO’s), a heavyweight via Cork, Ireland, where he defected and turned pro in 2008, and Bryant Jennings, of Philadelphia, PA. The winner will get a shot at WBC Heavyweight title holder, Bermane Stiverne.
Both men are undefeated. Perez suffered an injury which threatened the bout but Jennings did not defer. Perez, who scored an upset win against another undefeated heavyweight, Magomed Adusalamov, will now be called on again to score an unlikely win. He holds the WBC (US-NBC) title. He (Jennings) is good. I know if I missed anything, my friend will help me out.” Mike added coyly.
Bryant Jennings is coming off an impressive win over Poland’s Artur Szpilka, scoring a 10th round stoppage this past January, in the same arena he will fight in tomorrow. At 29 and undefeated in 18 bouts with 10 KO’s is quite confident. “He (Perez) has a great story coming from Cuba to Ireland.” Bryant explained. “I have a great story too. I live in Philadelphia.”
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman is excited to stage this bout. “The WBC is proud to sanction the fight between Perez and Jennings as a final elimination fight as part of the WBC tournament in the Heavyweight division.”
