SOBs will be the scene of an epic night in NYC musical history as Salsa Meets Funk on August 2!
Charlie Palmieri spearheaded the Descarga jam session style of recording in Latin music. His recordings for legendary companies like Alegre Records in the 1960s stimulated competition among companies like Tico and Fania Records, leading them to form their own All Star bands in response. This intense musical evolution led to the Salsa explosion of the 70s.
Few people have had more influence over the course of popular music than James Brown. And no other musician put on a more exhilarating stage show. His music is credited with turning R&B into Soul then blending both into Funk. He’s also the most sampled artist in hiphop making his music truly timeless.
Eddie Palmieri Music Management (EPMM) and the Global Rhythm Group (GRG) will pay tribute to both pioneers with the Salsa Meets Funk jam session/descarga at SOBs on August 2 with the GRG All Stars, Bernard Purdie, DJ Questlove and DJ Henry Knowles.
The GRG All Stars under the direction of Jimmy Bosch feature a who’s who of Latin music including Herman Olivera, Bobby Allende, Marc Quinones, Arturo Ortiz and Pete Nater. World renowned DJ Henry Knowles will curate the Latin musical selection when Salsa Meets Funk.
Bernard “Pretty” Purdie is the world’s most recorded drummer, having played with James Brown, Aretha Franklin, BB King, Louie Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and many others. An all-time great soul, R&B, funk, and pop drummer, Purdie’s impeccable time and mastery of backbeats and grooves universally are celebrated. Spinning a James Brown-inspired Funk dj set is Late Show with Jimmy Fallon band leader, DJ Questlove of the Roots.
