I knew I would be in for some laughs when I was invited to attend the off-Broadway show Sex Tips For Straight Women From A Gay Man which is loosely based on the international bestselling book by Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman.
I’ve been anxious to see the titillating show because I heard such great reviews and it did not disappoint! It was a rainy Saturday in NYC but that wasn’t going to damper my mood. I invited my single friend because, well, the name says it all.
The theater was intimate and packed, which I heard by the writer Matt Murphy was typical on a Saturday night. The crowd ranged from young single ladies to older married couples. The best part was the interaction and participation of audience members, in particular scenes like “Name That Penis.”
The three character comedy act directed by Tim Drucker includes Jason Michael Snow (Book of Mormon, as well as collaborating in the composition and libretto Internet sensation Shut Down Russian Broadway) as the gay and quick-witted sex expert Dan, Lindsay Nicole Chambers (Lysistrata Jones, Forbidden Broadway, “Submissions Only”) as the shy, reserved college professor Robyn and Andrew Brewer (Cougar the Musical) as the hunky “scientist” Stefan. The cast could not have been more perfect!
The setting takes place in the auditorium of Midtown Manhattan Community College campus, a forum that goes by the name of Rendezvous with Alternative Authors of the Modern Era (RAA-ME) with an interactive conversation with the author of Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man. With the help of Stefan, a sexy scene assistant, author Dan Anderson encourages Robyn, the shy moderator of the event, to follow your dreams, with his instructions. One in particular was how to manually arouse a man in four easy steps using a rolled theater program!
My face literally hurt from laughing so hard. This is a definite MUST see show if you are in New York City. The shows schedule is: Monday at 8pm, Tuesday at 7pm, Thursday at 8pm, Friday at 7pm and 10pm, Saturdays at 2 and 8 pm and Sundays at 7pm.
Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man is being presented at the 777 Theatre (777 Eighth Avenue, between 47th and 48th Streets) Off Broadway.
