  • The Cielo gala is the largest fundraising event for HIV and AIDS in the Latino community, and has raised millions for the initiatives and operations of the Latino Commission on AIDS over the last 20 years.
  • This year’s 25th Anniversary of the Latino Commission on AIDS marks an important milestone in the organization’s history.
  • Each year, Cielo mobilizes a leadership network of concerned members of the health, business, government, entertainment, fashion and philanthropic sectors, and individual donors, to support the Commission’s vision – to create a world without HIV and AIDS.
  • Over 220,000 Latinos in the U.S. and Puerto Rico have been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS. Latinos represent 16% of the U.S. population but account for 21% of all new HIV infections.


    This past Wednesday, April 15, Macy’s officially kicked off its 25th anniversary celebration of The Latino Commission on Aids with Miss Universe 2014, Paulina Vega as the newest Madrina during a reception with prominent personalities and media. The Latino Commission on Aids is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meet the health challenges and the impact of HIV/AIDS in the Hispanic community.

    Miss Universe, Paulina Vega thanked the commission for this honor and distinction, saying she embraces the commitment and the responsibility that comes with being an spokesperson and a madrina of the institution,

    I am a woman eager to do things, I am passionate and authentic, I have no masks

    she said in reference to the work she will do on behalf of this important cause.

    Guillermo Chacon, President of The Latino Commission On AIDS, welcomed and thanked guests for their support to the cause and to the thousands of Latinos affected by the disease,

    We have come very far in the past 25 years and we are very proud of the work done, however, we recognize that there is still a critical need for our work, Said Chacon.

    On May 15, the commission will have the important gala Cielo Latino at Cipriani Wall Street. This gala event is the largest fundraising for the cause of AIDS in the Latino community.

    The Latino Commission on AIDS will pay tribute and recognize the following leaders during the 19th annual Cielo Latino benefit, including:

    • Janssen, Business Leadership Award
    • Maria Mejia, Dennis deLeon Voz de Compromiso Award

    Actor Rosie Perez is honorary chair and entertainment will be provided by International salsa sensation Jose Alberto “El Canario”. Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler will participate in the program as the 2014 Madrina of the Latino Commission on AIDS.

    The Cielo Latino Gala raises funds in support of the Latino Commission on AIDS to create and promote HIV & AIDS service programs and initiatives aimed at education, prevention, and treatment of HIV & AIDS for Hispanic/Latinos, as well as to build capacity among other organizations serving Latino communities throughout the U.S. and the US Territories.

    The Cielo Latino Gala will take place on Wednesday, May 14, 2013, 6:30-7:30 PM (red carpet), 7:45 – 9:30 PM (awards program) at Cipriani Wall Street- 55 Wall Street- New York, New York 10005 (Media are invited to set up between 5:30-6:30pm).

    Designing a World without AIDS” is the theme for the Annual Gala Cielo Latino, an evening of Solidarity, Action and Commitment to raise awareness of the impact of AIDS amongst Hispanics in the United States, Puerto Rico and continue the journey to reach an AIDS-free generation. The Latino Commission on AIDS believes that by coming together, the Latino community will send a strong message of hope and action that will overcome any challenge in reaching healthy communities free of stigma and discrimination.
