It is Friday morning and while some people are celebrating that there are only 8 hours until the weekend “officially begins”, I decide to head out to the 97th Street Greenmarket event on 97th street between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues. This event happens every Friday from 8am to 2pm and offers a variety of produce, meat, grains and dairy products for purchase.
Before arriving to the event, I was thinking this was going to be a really big market with lots of people talking and enjoying the morning. However, when I got there, it was a whole different story. The market itself only took up about a quarter of the block and there were no more than half a dozen food stands. It seemed as though this was a popular event for the locals because as people approached the stands, they were greeted warmly and knew exactly what they were buying. It also seemed that this event became a tradition for them to be able to go and pick up fresh produce and other perishable items. With food concerns becoming the forefront of people’s mind, I could see why people would want to shop organically.
For a local event, this would be perfect for someone who is watching on what they eat, for fitness trainers and instructors, or even to pick up some great food for recipes. It is an event that I feel people will continue to go to as a habit, just as if they were going to go food shopping every week.
