The night after Valentine’s day, Queens based artist Shaun Leonardo will be transforming No Longer Empty’s current exhibition into a Mesera club – but one where roles and expectations are reversed. Unlike typical Central and Latin American Mesera clubs (now very popular in Queens), this club will ask women to pay men for a dance of cumbia, bachata or merengue, putting them in the position of choice and power. Hosted within No Longer Empty’s current exhibition in a vacant bank building, party goers will enjoy a DJ featuring Latin American music, drinks, and dances with professional dancers around the old bank building.
‘The TIki-TIki Club’ party and performance shakes up gender roles and feelings of ‘machismo’ often present in these clubs – and provides a fun alternative to the traditional Valentine’s day romantic events.
