The second season of auditions has started for the upcoming season of FOX’s X Factor and along with showcasing new talent the season also presents its two newest judges: Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. The first taping of the season was filmed this past Thursday and while Britney Spears received the longest and loudest applause welcome, it was Demi Lovato who stole the spotlight during the first day of filming the hit reality show.
Joining the panel of judges featuring series creator and renowned “hardest judge” Simon Cowell, producer L.A. Reid, and pop princess Britney Spears, Lovato shined during the two days spent in Austin, Texas judging the estimated 31 singers and groups who audition for a chance to win the show’s coveted $5 million dollar recording contact. The former Disney star took her role as judge seriously and engaged with the 4000 or so crowd of hopefuls who filled the Frank Erwin Center.
While the first round of auditions is particularly new to both pop stars, some freshmen nervousness may have been exhibited by Britney Spears who was moderately encouraging to the hopefuls, giving them positive comments and granting most of them a ‘yes’ to move one, while her comments were particularly short and she wasn’t as engaging as Lovato was. Lovato gave insightful comments, drew cheers and laughs from the crowd, and on an occasion left Cowell open-mouthed and stunned when the two went toe-to-toe in banter.
Embracing her position as judge, Lovato would playfully flirt with most of the young male performers who approached the stage. Her doing so lead Cowell to quip in “She is single now”. The chemistry between Lovato and Cowell, especially their verbal tango, was reminiscent of the banter once exhibited by Paula Abdul and Cowell.
When a captivating 22-year-old contestant was being critiqued by the judges Cowell, aged 52, confessed his affection for the hopeful by saying “It’s too bad we didn’t meet 10 years from now,”
Lovato chimed-in with a snarky “More like 30 years.”
Momentarily stunned, Cowell responded to the 19-year-old judge “Demi, you’re going into the naughty chair.” The exchange was just one of many between the two.
However, aside from the interactions between the four judges it was also the reaction with the contestants themselves show execs were hoping for since it produced entertaining moments that would hopefully increased the show’s rating for the next season of the series.
