Peña was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before he and his family moved to Providence, Rhode Island, when he was nine years old. He attended High School in Providence, playing baseball, running track and cross country.
In 2014, his junior year, he batted .352. As a senior in 2015, he hit .390 with a couple home runs. Following his senior year, he was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 39th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign and instead enrolled at the University of Maine where he played college baseball and afterwards he was recruited by the Houston Astros
The Houston Astros bet big on rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña this season, and they are glad they did, because the 25 year old Dominican born Phenom not only had a terrific rookie season, but he is now part of baseball history.
In winning the World Series MVP award in his starting year and becoming the third rookie in MLB history, and first rookie position player, to win World Series MVP.
The only other two rookies to receive the honor were Larry Sherry for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959 and Liván Hernández for the Florida Marlins in 1997.
The Astros finished off the Philadelphia Phillies in six games at the 2022 world series..
The 25-year-old Peña was the Astros’ most effective hitter throughout the postseason, and he reached another plateau in the fall Classic by hitting .400/.423/.714. He got hits in all 6 games and a run in all but the team’s Game 3 shutout loss.
That came after an ALCS MVP performance one round earlier, in which he went 6-for-17 with two homers against the New York Yankees. Just as valuable as Peña’s bat, his defense has been golden, that he earned a Gold Glove at shortstop during the regular season.
