Dominican Republic Qualifies for Olympics in Historic Soccer Victory
The Dominican Republic made history in Honduras, achieving something never done before: qualifying a soccer team for the Olympic Games. The U-20 national team triumphed over Guatemala in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 4-2 after the match ended in a 2-2 draw in both regular and extra time.

The game, held at Estadio Francisco Morazán in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, saw both teams locked at 2-2 after full time and extra time. This result means both countries have secured their spots in the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia next year.
This qualification marks a significant milestone as soccer becomes the first sport in which the Dominican Republic has secured a place in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The tournament champion will be decided on Sunday when the Dominican Republic faces the United States, who later defeated Honduras 3-0 in the other semifinal, also earning their spot in the 2024 Olympics. The championship match is set for Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.
A Brave Comeback: Overcoming the Odds
Despite trailing 0-2 in the first third of the match, the Dominican team displayed remarkable resilience. In the 23rd minute, Guatemala’s Daniel Cardoza sent a corner kick into the box, where Arquímides Ordóñez headed it into the goal, putting Guatemala ahead. Just six minutes later, Ordóñez struck again, capitalizing on a cross and navigating through three defenders to score, doubling Guatemala’s lead.
Though the Dominican team dominated possession (57-43), Guatemala was more effective with four shots on goal to the Dominican’s one in the first half. Dominican coach Mariano Pérez Tejada, filling in for Walter Benítez, made strategic changes at halftime, substituting goalkeeper Xavier Valdez for Omry Bello and midfielder Aniel Rojas for Bryan More.

The Equalizer and the Winning Moment
The Dominican team, known for their comebacks, didn’t back down in the second half. By the 62nd minute, they leveled the score. Ángel Montes de Moca saved a corner kick and passed it to Guillermo de Peña, who unleashed a powerful shot that found the back of the net. A minute later, Aniel Rojas drove into the box from the left, setting up Edison Azcona for the equalizer with a precise strike.
The momentum remained with the Dominicans. In the 91st minute, an Azcona free kick nearly resulted in a goal. Pérez made a final substitution, bringing in Luis Francisco for Alfeni Tamárez. The match went to penalties, where Thomas Jungbauer, Azcona, De Peña, and Adhonys María scored, securing the win. Bello’s crucial save in the shootout highlighted his excellent performance.
This match marked Guatemala’s third consecutive penalty shootout after eliminating Canada and Mexico.
Looking Ahead: Multiple Qualifications
With this victory, the Dominican team not only heads to the Paris 2024 Olympics but also qualifies for the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador in 2023, the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, the same year, in addition to the World Cup and the Olympics. This historic achievement sets a new standard for Dominican soccer and promises a bright future for the sport in the nation.
