Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation after Cuba, and an estimated 10 million people, more than 10% of the population lives in New York City estimated at over two million live in the tri-state area. Dominican Carnival has been around since the 16th century. History tells that the DR Carnival really became a country’s tradition after our independence which happened on February, 1844. Every year, we celebrate our traditional and very popular carnival. This amazing festivity is celebrated every Sunday of the month of February. Our carnival is enchanted by general happiness, you will find a variety of colorful parades in the streets. Thousands and thousands of people around the country and the world gather in the streets to celebrate to enjoy this wonderful holiday. Apart from our traditional parades of Diablo Cojuelo y Roba la Gallina, people can also enjoy concerts by national and international artists and a wide variety of typical foods. Our famous Carnival is celebrated by region, but these days the most popular carnival is the one from the city of La Vega. The “Carnaval Vegano” is the most important cultural event in the city, and has been declared a National Folk Heritage.
