“Growing Up Gonzales” the Nuyorican Comedy/Drama written and directed by Felix Rojas and starring Andre Chulisi Rodriguez (recently upgraded to an open ended run) turned 50 on April 21st. The 50th performance was marked with celebration, pride and gratitude. This huge milestone for a Latino Off Broadway show far surpassed the show’s expectations.
Growing Up Gonzales is a bitter sweet comedy about a two brothers and their tender goodbye. When Johnny Gonzales finds his reclusive and recently deceased brother Cisco’s memoirs tucked away in the closet he comes face to face with the truth about the relationship they never had. Johnny, the perennial bad boy and Cisco, the good son, go their separate ways as adults only to be brought back together by Johnny’s rich discovery.
The NY Times called it “Warm and Funny”, Back Stage calls it “Pulsating and Vibrant”, The Daily News says “it will keep you pinned to your seat”.
The announcement of the Open ended run came on a night that Justice Sonia Sotomayor was in attendance. Kudos from the Justice was icing on the cake for this Off Broadway sleeper.
