The 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was another page in the storybook year of Laurie Hernandez. The young Puerto-Rican gymnast who was part of the 2016 Rio Olympics Gold Medal winning team this year has yet to come down from the clouds. Laurie reflected on her “insane” invitation to ride on one of the floats recalling her family tradition of watching the event every year.
“My five year old self is giving me a high five right now,”
The woman known as the “Human Emoji” described the feeling.
Laurie has been everywhere since the Olympic win. She has thrown first ball at a New York Met game, met President Obama and his wife, and added more hardware to the trophy case as she won the 2016 “Dancing with the Stars” competition with partner Val Chmerkovsky with a perfect score in the finals on one dance and two points shy of a perfect score on another.
All this and Laurie is not even 17 yet. Laurie pointed out that the toughest aspect of the Dancing show was wearing heels since gymnasts work barefoot in their careers. However her desire to “inspire others” is being accomplished as many are living vicariously through her experiences. Laurie better get used to wearing the heels because midnight has not struck for this effervescent lady.
