This Tuesday is Election Day where we will be heading to the voter booths to select new or re-elect already sitting officials to represent us. Ensuring that many know the importance of this day, local community organization known as the Heart of the South Bronx is making a grand effort this weekend to remind everyone to head to the voters’ booth this upcoming November 5th.
Nos Quedamos is a non-profit community development located in the South Bronx and consists of residents, home, and business owners from the 35 block area of Melrose Commons has taken on the task of informing their neighbors about taking hold of their civic duty.
Started back in the 90s, the organization was established in what was considered to be the “nation’s poorest congressional district,” according to the organization’s site, but rose up in a show of unity to ward of redevelopment that would scatter and change the area. The organization came together to plan the area’s own redevelopment with included anchored members of the area.
Since its creation the group has taken on a leadership role in the area with the “intention to guide the process of change, progress, and implementation of the housing and urban development goals,” they have defined in what they referred to as Melrose Commons Urban Renewal Plan. The plan gives a voice to area residents regarding the growth of their neighborhood.
The organization is hoping to educate members of the South Bronx and Melrose community about the importance of voting. By informing members of the community about the importance of their vote counting the organization is continuing its tradition of making the voice of every citizen heard through the casting their count.
