When you’re a young actor and you’re on one of television’s hit shows, wanting to be a part of the cast until its very end or until you’ve earned yourself a name in Hollywood is what most would want. To be removed from a show, whether fired or written-off, is something most do not intend on ever experiencing. However, for actress Naya Rivera she’s content that the up-and-coming season of Fox’s “Glee” could very well be her last year.
Last month when word slipped out that Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith will be donning a graduation cap and will be exiting the musical comedy this year fans of the show expressed outrage and shock over the decision made by show execs. And adding to the list of graduates, Rivera has said that McKinley High’s resident mean girl Santana Lopez would be among the cast members to wear a cap and gown to retrieve their diploma.
“I’m a senior. I guess that means I’m graduating. That’s what happens when you’re a senior!” Rivera said, she doesn’t appear to express much shock about the decision since she goes on to say that, “I don’t think it’s a thing. It’s like, what is it when you’re in high school? You’re a senior, you graduate. Yes, I’m graduating this year.”
While she has embraced the fact her character must graduate from the musically-talented high school, Rivera is left with the idea that moving on from the series will in fact be an emotional one. “It will always be bittersweet because this is like our baby and we’ve been with it since the beginning and it’s always sad. It’s literally like the feeling of being in high school. I’ve had a great run and hopefully it continues.”
Although the announcement that the show may lose some of its heavy hitters with fans, there are rumors circulating about a possible spin-off that has fans and Fox producers in a media tailspin. Show creator, Ryan Murphy has denied that there are any spin-off in the works meanwhile Fox executive Kevin Reilly recently said in a interview that no decision has yet to be made.
While Rivera isn’t sure whether her character will do well within a spin-off of some sort, Rivera does hope that her hard-not to love or envy Santana does do well after high school, “Hopefully she gets into some type of college, but I think she’s going to be a hot mess in college.” What is confirmed about the show’s upcoming third season is that, according to Reilly, the storylines will focus on the show’s regular characters rather than guest stars and musical tribute episodes.
Well, whether Rivera’s character graduates from Glee or not, Rivera has a promising future. Not only has Rivera been nominated for two ALMA awards for “Favorite TV Actress – Leading Role in a Comedy” and “Favorite Female Music Artist” she was just recently signed to Columbia Records back in May of 2011 to produce a solo album. All is looking up for upcoming Glee graduate Rivera.
