Is that Snow White? No, no it is not but it is Tilda Swinton sleeping in a glass box.
If you happen to be at New York’s Museum of Modern Art you may have come across Scottish actress Tilda Swinton taking a nap. Photos began circulating the web when the “Burn After Reading” actress was discovered sleeping inside of a glass box at MoMA.
Before her glass box a description card called the performance “The Maybe.” Along with its title the following insert was written, “Living artist, glass, steel, mattress, pillow, linen, water, and spectacles.”
Wearing a light blue shirt and dark blue pants, Swinton laid atop white bedding with a pair of reading eyeglasses resting beside her. Although the display was quite a surprise, the display isn’t all too new for Swinton.
Known as an arthouse performer, the Oscar-winner first installation of this performance was performed several times before. The piece was first developed back in 1995 with producer and friend Joanna Scanlan. The piece has been performed in 1996 at the Museo Barracco in Rome and again in 2005 at the Serpentine Gallery in London.
In past performances, the piece will be on displayed for the public up to a week and everyone can expect Swinton will appear several times with the box for a nap. However, when she will perform is unknown. The performance dates are a mystery to everyone, especially the museum employees. It is believed Swinton herself chooses when to be in the box.
