On Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Odd Man Out,” Rita Moreno plays Gayle, a put-upon wife whose philandering husband ends up in the hospital and is need of neurosurgery.
*Spoiler Alert for yesterday’s episode if you haven’t seen it.*
Unbeknownst to the doctors, Amelia Shepherd and Andrew Riggs, the person that gets to the hospital first that they are speaking to is the husband’s mistress of 11 years, Lena. Shortly afterwards, Gayle storms into Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital wondering if her husband had met his maker in hopes of inheriting $30 million after signing an ironclad prenup 3o years ago before he became wealthy.
How is Griffin? Is he dead?”
When her spouse suddenly comes to, Griffin has completely forgotten the past 11 years and calls out for her. Surprised, Gayle is at first annoyed that he can’t remember his affair as he tries to cling to her in his time of need and becomes confused about why he would ever cheat on his wife in the first place.
As Griffin awaits surgery, he begins to reminisce with Gayle about the good old times and she starts to miss him for the first time in over a decade. Lena, however, is heartbroken that she can’t see her beloved Griffin, and is told to stay away as he is still puzzled as to who she is and that may cause undue stress before Griff goes under the knife.
When it’s time for Griffin to go under, Gayle finds herself worried about his condition and wonders if he will be alright, but, more importantly, if he will stay the man that she once fell in love with all those years ago.
Unfortunately, Gayle’s wish has come true, and Griffin dies on the table. Offscreen Dr. Shepherd tells both Gayle and Lena of his Griffin’s passing.
