Latin History for Morons: The Road to Broadway is a documentary in progress by filmmaker Ben DeJesus. The film captures John Leguizamo’s quest to cram 3,000 years of history into 90 minutes of stage time as a one-man show. The road to his ultimate goal – his next Broadway hit, unfolds in a fun, intriguing, and poignant adventure that offers an intimate look into the journey of a passionate artist but also shines a light on the rarely-told stories of Latino heroes who made their mark on America.
The Indiegogo Campaign is to fund the documentary in progress called Latin History for Morons: John Leguizamo’s Road to Broadway. The film is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at John’s journey and process as he creates his latest one-man show.
It first dawned on John when he was in prison. That is, at Rikers Island, where he was visiting young Latinos serving time in jail. John’s visit to prison sparked some burning questions. Why is it that 45% of Latino kids in the U.S. drop out of high school, with too many of them ending up here? Thinking back on his own days in the New York City public school system, he didn’t remember being too engaged…in fact, his teachers could barely say his name right.
