Latinas at the 2013 American Music Awards

Latinas showcased their style and grace on the red carpet at the 2013 American Music Awards. Here are some of my favorites.

Half Ecuadorian Christina Aguilera looked great in her elegant white gown. She reminded me of an old Hollywood actress.

Naya Rivera is a Puerto Rican hottie and she looked amazing in her black keyhole gown. Her hair and makeup were phenomenal.

La Cubana Daisy Fuentes showed us that you don’t have to show a lot to be sexy. She wore a Tadashi Shoji halter gown that featured a white lace applique bodice with a sheer nude illusion back that transitioned into a long black, fit-and-flare skirt.

A New York Holiday – Barneys collaboration with Shawn ‘JAY Z’ Carter

Jay Z’s collection for Barneys was unveiled yesterday. The pricey 30-piece collection ranges from $70 to $58,000. All items are located in a separate back room of the Madison Avenue department store which is guarded by a bouncer.

Originally, 25 percent of sales were meant to go to his charity, but after the shop-and-frisk scandal where Barneys store racially profiled two black shoppers they upped it to 100 percent going back to the Shawn Cater Foundation. The foundation helps low-income children further their education.

Simple Ways To Maintain Your Sexy This Season

During the end of the year we tend to juggle more than usual…holiday shopping, parties, travel plans, cooking and the list goes on. This “correr correr” always affects our eating habits. Dale Noelle founder of TRUE Model Management, former model and health coach provided some great tips to maintain our sexy this season and increase our energy while juggling our hectic schedules.

desk

DO:
Take stairs instead of elevators.
Take slow, deep breaths.
Stand tall with stomach and gluteus muscles engaged.
Keep even weight on feet with hips and shoulders level, tighten all muscles as much as you can and then release and repeat while standing still ,waiting on a lines, etc.,
Walk home from the office/grocery/shopping and lift and lower bags to tone your arms and back.
Squats while washing/conditioning your hair and cleaning the shower with a squeegee.
Sit on a ball at your desk instead of a chair.
Stretch before you get out of bed every morning and before you go to bed at night.
Park farther from building entrances and walk briskly to your destination.
Carry a refillable glass bottle of water with fruit or herbs inside (add a spring of rosemary, mint leaves, cinnamon stick, lemon or orange slices, etc.).
Join a sports team for fun (even if you never played the sport before, most organized athletic leagues offer beginner options).
Carry at least one healthy snack in your bag (nuts, apple).
Choose exercises that are easy on your joints and strengthen without causing bulk; yoga is a great option.

DO NOT:
Eat if you are not hungry.
Sit if you can stand.
Impulsively grab empty calorie and/or sugary snacks.
Deny yourself of your favorite fattening foods (but do limit portions and/or only eat them once a week).

Dale also expressed the importance of drinking plenty of water (especially high ph level waters), eating greens, eating less pasta, bread, sugar, red meat and dairy as simple lifestyle changes that will improve our metabolism, increase our energy, create positive emotions and tone our muscles.

Lingerie for the Real Size Women

On November 13th in New York City Victoria’s Secret taped their annual fashion show.

I tune in every year because I enjoy watching the glamorous models strut their confidence on the long elaborate runway and watch the great performances but I know that my 40-35-47 Latin curvy frame will never fit in any of their selections. So today I want to share Christina’s Secret.

Here are some of my favorite places to shop for sexy lingerie for the “real size” women.

Hips and Curves
Located in Southern California, Hips and Curves.com opened for business in 2000 and has been going strong ever since! They offer a secure, private and entertaining shopping experience while bringing you the latest and greatest in plus size lingerie styles. They carry a wide assortment of lingerie from sweet and demure to smokin’ hot styles for plus-sized women everywhere.

Intimates Plus
The dream began in 2007 when full-size CEO was in the market for a sexy and luxurious piece of lingerie for a special occasion. She searched high and low at all of the well know lingerie retailers. She even searched well known plus-size boutiques; nothing piqued her interest. Everything was either not cut for her ample size 18 body, not sexy enough, or was just simply not made from quality materials. She thought that she couldn’t be the only real-size woman having this issue, thus, Intimates Plus was born.

Addition Elle

Ann Nahari
Originally launched in 2000 under the brand name Full Figure Design, the new lingerie division is a complete revamp and rebrand of the collection for the Ann Nahari woman. “We have upgraded the whole collection with better fit and fabrication,” says Ms. Rasheed. “The new collection reflects both sexiness and comfort with styles that are on trend.

Holiday Cooking Tips with Chef Ema Quevedo

The holidays are all about family and delicious comida. Today I chatted with Chef Ema Quevedo to get us some great cooking tips for this holiday season.

SuperMoistRoastedTurkey (1)

Do you have a yummy twist for our typical Thanksgiving turkey recipe?

Ema Quevedo: I love to play around with the stuffing. One of my favorites is an Apple Pecan stuffing. It is so easy and quick to make. You simply have to melt all ingredients in a skillet over Country Crock® and their tastes blend beautifully. There are so many different versions of stuffing to choose from. You can be really creative. There are other delicious ideas on www.vivemejor.com.

Personally I am the eater in the family and my mother and aunts are the cookers. What’s an easy-to-do dish that “non-cookers” can donate to a dinner party?

Ema Quevedo: A delicious and real simple recipe to prepare for all those out there who don’t really enjoy cooking is a Roasted Eggplant dip. You simply roast your eggplants, place them in a food processor, add some lemon juice and Knorr® Cilantro Minicubes and you’re all set! Everyone will love this dip. It’s the perfect dish to take to any dinner party.

ROASTED EGGPLANT DIP

• 1/2 cup olive oil
• 2 medium eggplants, peeled and diced
• 2 Knorr® Garlic MiniCubes, crumbled
• 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
• 1 Knorr® Cilantro MiniCube , crumbled

DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 450°.

2. Arrange eggplant on an aluminum-foil-lined baking sheet. Drizzle olive oil over eggplant, then sprinkle with Knorr® Garlic MiniCubes; toss to coat. Roast for 30 minutes or until eggplant is very tender, stirring once.

3. Process eggplant with remaining ingredients in a food processor or blender until smooth. Serve with your favorite vegetable dippers or tortilla chips.

Can you share your favorite traditional holiday recipe?

Ema Quevedo: My family is Mexican, so we definitely include a lot of traditional foods like tamales. We all get together to help prepare them. Some of us fill the tamal while others wrap them up. It’s a must on our family menu. Plus, it’s quick and easy to prepare.

Can you share a recipe for yummy holiday leftovers?

Ema Quevedo: Absolutely! You can always go for the traditional left-over turkey sandwich, but if you want to spice things up a bit, you can try turkey wraps with chipotle mayo. You combine a couple of chipotle peppers, a green onion, lime juice and Hellmann’s® Mayonnaise. Add the turkey, cucumber, tomato and lettuce and wrap it up!

CHIPOTLE MAYO
• 3 Tbsp. Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Light Mayonnaise
• 1 green onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tbsp. chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
• 1 tsp. lime juice

DIRECTIONS
Combine Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Light Mayonnaise, green onion, chipotle peppers and lime juice in small bowl.

The holidays bring large crowds to our homes, any tips on cooking a large meal on a budget?

Ema Quevedo: As long as you have the basics: garlic, cilantro, onions, salt and pepper, I think you can make any dish flavorful without breaking your wallet. Sometimes recipes call for lots of ingredients, but you can always use a recipe as a guide and add your own twist. Also, buying in advance helps. Buying your turkey early can help you save money by finding good deals plus, you get a chance to marinate it beforehand, guaranteeing it will be full of flavor!

Autism in Latino Community

According to the CDC Hispanic children with autism remain undiagnosed or often diagnosed later than the national average. Communication and cultural barriers were cited as some of the reasons for the delay in diagnosis. However, Pediatricians feel that Latino parents don’t have as much knowledge about autism as other races so they bring up fewer concerns. It is important to remember that you know your child best. If you are concerned at any time, voice it!

Early intervention is critical and extremely important. The earlier the problem is identified, the earlier intervention can begin, and the more likely your child is to learn the skills they need to communicate, engage in social interactions and manages their behavior.

What is Autism?
Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. It’s a group of complex disorders of brain development that can range in severity, that often impair development of social, communication and behavioral skills. Studies show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

What are the signs?
The following “red flags” may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If your child exhibits any of the following, please don’t delay in asking your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation:

• No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter
• No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions by nine months
• No babbling by 12 months
• No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months
• No words by 16 months
• No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months
• Any loss of speech, babbling or social skills at any age

Located on the Autism Speaks website is the M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) which can help you determine if a professional should evaluate your child. This simple online autism screen takes only a few minutes.

Seek further information about the early signs of autism and additional screening resources at autismspeaks.org/signs and autismspeaks.org/aprende for Spanish information.

With the proper supports and intervention all people with autism are able to go on to live fulfilling lives, as independently as possible. I am a proud mother of a 16 year old who was diagnosed at 2.3 years old. He currently speaks multiple languages, is able to sign language and is a bright lovable teenager who is attending his first year of High School. There is hope.
