gloria - the motion picture soundtrack

Varèse Sarabande will release the GLORIA – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, digitally on August 21, 2015.  The film features original music by Lorne Balfe (TERMINATOR GENISYS, HOME, The Penguins of Madagascar) along with nine classic Gloria Trevi songs performed by Sofía Espinosa, who stars as Gloria in the film.

Espinoza studied CDs, news clips and videos to in order to perfect the ‘concert’ performance in the film.  While recording the music, she worked closely with some of Trevi’s former band members to recreate the nuance of Gloria’s voice and phrasing.  In the film and on the soundtrack her performances are virtually identical to archival footage of the multi-million selling superstar.

“We really wanted to tell the story through the music, not stop the story for a musical performance,” the director and leading force behind the film, Christian Keller explained. “One of the first things that Gloria told me was, ‘If you want to know my story, just look at the lyrics of my songs.’ She is one of music’s most prolific songwriters and at every point in her life, she wrote about what she was experiencing. The songs in the film complement Gloria’s inner world, her thoughts and emotions. Instead of interrupting the plot, they support and drive the story line.”

“There are few directors who would sacrifice ten years of their lives for a film,” said composer Balfe. “Christian Keller’s dedication to Gloria’s story is a true testament to the importance he places on the details in his film. Each of Gloria’s songs tells an important part of her life and Christian does them justice in his visual retelling of her remarkable story. He placed great faith in me to create a score for Gloria and I am thankful to have been a part of his long and fruitful journey.”

A bold and compelling tale of ambition, betrayal and redemption, Gloria chronicles the life of international pop star Gloria Trevi, the ‘Mexican Madonna.’ Carefully groomed by an abusive manager and propelled by her politically charged lyrics and unashamed sexuality, Gloria shoots to unparalleled stardom—until a sex scandal that mesmerized the world brings her crashing down.

The New York Times describes, “Gloria, a screen biography of Gloria Trevi, the rebellious pop diva widely viewed as Mexico’s Madonna, would be worth seeing if for no other reason than for the tempestuous performance of its star Sofía Espinosa. With its dry-eyed view of the seamier side of show business, it is a superior pop-star portrait. Ms. Espinosa’s ferocious performance evokes both Madonna and Miley Cyrus.”

The Director Christian Keller refuses to look at Gloria’s life as a tragic tale of seduction and sexual abuse. His aim has always been to tell a universally relatable story about an ambitious young woman who is in love and yearning to feel loved. “That led her to a very dark place,” Keller said. “She and Sergio certainly did some crazy things, but they also created magic together. And she has emerged from a potentially crushing experience as a strong, triumphant woman who has gone on to even more success.”

Picturehouse will release the film GLORIA on DVD, Digital HD and On Demand this fall through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Varèse Sarabande will release the GLORIA – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, digitally on August 21, 2015.

Mexican singer Gloria Trevi working on a new CD

“It will be something different, always taking a chance but with things that come straight from my heart,” the songstress said during a visit to Los Angeles.
Trevi was uncompromising in saying that in her new disc she’s not going “with the formula,” and will again be setting off in an unexplored direction.
In her most recent concert in Los Angeles last October, the “Mexican Madonna,” as many of her fans call her, for the first time performed a song live in English, which seems to have been the first step toward a future crossover.
“All my life I wanted to do the crossover of languages, because I’ve already done it generationally and socially speaking: at my concerts you see people of all ages and all social classes, breaking those barriers and borders through music,” Trevi said.
In her concert at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Trevi sang the number “Habla Blah Blah” in English.
“It was our people who inspired me to do it, it was seeing that LatinosPicture1 in the United States have no fear of speaking out and expressing themselves,” Trevi said, adding that she finds it difficult to talk in English.
“So I said ‘Why am I so worried about singing with an accent if I’m Mexican?’ I’m not going to sing with a British accent or an Irish accent, but with a Mexican accent,” Trevi said

There are many who are reading this and wondering whether it was worth it to travel an hour to Long Island at the Nassau Coliseum for SBS Entertainment’s latest showcase “Amor a Nuestra Musica.” Fortunately the heavy rains came after the show. Before that, all was sunny skies inside as ten artists provided four pulsating hours of music excellence.

The diversity of talent was veteran in general but full of quality. Lets do a mix of concert thoughts along with press room central news, shall we? Perceptions and observations usually tell the story. Karlos Rose has become a familiar opener for these showcases. In search of life after hit covers, Rose has always been accessable and for a young, talented artist he deserves more. His day is coming.

A double dose of the ladies followed in Shaila Durcal and Natalia Jimenez. Needless to say Shaila, daughter of Rocio Durcal was awesome with her futuristic outfit and psychodelic performance was quite eventful. Natalia, who proved to be quite engaging and humble in press central was the polar opposite on stage as her voice boomed throughout the arena to great admiration which was signified by silence and glued eyes on the television feed.

Victor Manuelle brought electricity to the central as the Salsa sensation, dressed in simple black showed how simple gestures could draw all eyes in a room and on stage, he is peerless when he is in that zone.

We make note of the details where radio personality AJ El Kallejero made the rounds in press central shaking hands and making sure all was well. Vladimir Gomez and his team of three held it all together well on this evening with organizational excellence. More artists were made available than usual which was a plus and after a break we got Jesse Y Joy, five time Latin Grammy winners, who have been doing this for nine years.

They drew quite a crowd as the sister-brother duo stayed for a while fielding questions and their performance on stage was a smooth tempo of guitar and voice bringing the crowd to a mellower feeling. Joy’s brother’s kiss on the cheek was symbolic of their familial unity this evening.

Ricardo Montaner was all presence on stage and Frank Reyes, always impeccably dressed in black suit posed for photographers and on stage this Bachata artist was the strongest of crooners leaving the fans breathless.

Luis Fonsi appearance in press central was brief but Luis along with his trusted guitar was all the words he needed. Pablo Alboran, whether as the piano man or walking the stage, left quite an impression.

But the night went up a notch with the presence of Gloria Trevi, who pleased by the year she has had and with television projects and others in the works, the 46 year old superstar has more to offer. Trevi answered questions, Trevi posed, and Trevi even agreed to a “groupie” shot with press row. On stage she ignored the only major sound hiccup to energize the arena with a powerful three song set.

All in all it was a very satisfying event and a great way to close out 2014, a year where SBS was quite active. Kudos to the organization for being effective where it counts.

‘A Toda Gloria,’ Gloria Trevi’s First Reality Show Hits the Airwaves!

During a brotherly visit to my beloved sister’s place over the weekend I learned through her and her DVR that my sister’s idol, Gloria Trevi has a really show on Mun2, a 13-episode docu-series that premiered on Sunday. It’s geniusly named, “A Toda Gloria” which followers the Mexican pop star while on tour to promote her latest album with a birds eye view of her behind-the-scenes to the show’s creation with all the drama that comes with it, as well has her relaxed home life with her husband and children.

In an interview with Variety Trevi said, “It never occurred to me to have a reality series, given all the attention I get.

Honestly, why didn’t someone think of giving her a reality show years ago? I mean this is the woman who’s sold out concert arenas and topped the pop charts for decades, became a fugitive from the law who then served almost five years in prison in Brazil and Mexico even giving birth to her son while behind bars! That in itself would have made for really good television!

Gloria Trevi is a Mexican Pop/Rock goddess, an icon and let’s not kid ourselves, the gays adore her and you know once the gays do, she’s doing something right!

To give an idea of the Gloria Trevi trajectory, she has published over 400 songs, sold over 20 million records, surpassed 100 million video views online, and sold out concert venues around the world.

After living between Monterrey, Mexico and Miami the singer recently decided to set up residency in Texas to avoid the constant glare of paparazzi. However, when Mun2 reached out and informed Trevi that 80% of the respondents to a survey said they wanted to see a show about her, she agreed to do it!

Trevi told Variety, “I feel that making a reality show is giving my fans the keys to my home, my life and is a way of sharing my dreams and frustrations with them, I’ll just have to forget the cameras are there.

Where Trevi is concerned, there’s never a dull moment. In the fist episode, I gagged because there is a scene where Trevi is watching porn on a phone and expresses how hot the guy in the video is, while making her husband who sits next to her very uncomfortable, I mean it was just hysterical(to me)!

It seems Mun2 aims to accentuate the positive with “A Toda Gloria” but there’s no doubt that the channel hopes Trevi’s notoriety will translate to ratings. “This will show Trevi as a mother, a wife and an empowered woman,Mun2 Ruben Mendiola, told Variety, “it will give Trevi a chance to tell her own story as an artist.

A Toda Gloria” is in the tradition of Mun2’s successful string of celebrity reality series, starting with “I Love Jenni,” which centered on Mexican American pop icon Jenni Rivera, who died in a plane crash in late 2012 while the show was still in production.

Judging by the advance buzz on “A Toda Gloria,” Mun2 is expecting glorious results.

You can catch “A TODA GLORIA” on Mun2 Every Sunday at 9PM EST | 8PM Central

Gloria Trevi. From running a sex cult to prison to acquittal…The Movie!

Controversial pop/rock icon Gloria Trevi’s unbelievable life story.

Picturehouse has acquired all U.S. rights to GLORIA, the biopic based on the true story of Latin America’s most controversial pop-rock icon, Gloria Trevi, from Matthias Ehrenberg of Río Negro, and plans a first quarter 2015 release.

GLORIA has also been acquired by Universal Pictures International for release in Mexico and Latin America. The film will have a broad release in those territories in early January 2015.

GLORIA is a bold and compelling musical drama told through the lens of the provocative, socio-politically charged music that made her famous. Often referred to as the “Mexican Madonna” and called the “Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop” by VH1, Trevi has sold more than 20 million records and is currently again on top of all the charts.

The film traces Trevi’s ascent to stardom in the ‘80s and ‘90s with her manager and then husband Sergio Andrade, never shying away from their destructive relationship or his abusive sexual behavior and its consequences. It also chronicles her astounding fall from grace in 2000 when she was accused of running a sex cult and thrown in jail to her triumphant acquittal and release in 2004.

Gloria Trevi’s meteoric rise to stardom and astounding downfall is vividly portrayed in this riveting film about love, fame and betrayal,” says Picturehouse CEO Bob Berney. “We are excited to work with Matthias and his team at Río Negro to bring this film to audiences across the US.”

Written by one of Mexico’s top screenwriters and playwrights, Sabina Berman (BACKYARD, PANCHO VILLA AND A NAKED WOMAN), the film was directed by first timer Christian Keller, who chased down the Trevi’s life rights and has been developing her story since 2005.

It’s a story about redemption, love and unlove, and how one can lose control of things; it doesn’t intend to scandalize, but it certainly doesn’t hide what happened,” says Río Negro’s founder Matthias Ehrenberg. “Christian has delivered a very powerful movie, well-conceived and well-directed.”

Sofia Espinosa explodes on the screen in the title role, performing some of Trevi’s most beloved hits, including her first Number One hit, “Dr. Psiquiatra,” from 1989. Marco Perez (AMORES PERROS, TRADE, BACKYARD) delivers a tour-de-force performance as Sergio Andrade whose rise on the back of Gloria´s success unleashes his most destructive sexual demons and ultimately brings them both down.

The film was made with a top notch team of filmmakers, including producers Matthias Ehrenberg (ITS NOT YOU, ITS ME, THE OTHER FAMILY, BEFORE NIGHT FALLS, CHANCE), Barrie M. Osborne (THE GREAT GATSBY, THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy) and Alan B. Curtiss (MASTER AND COMMANDER, THE PRESTIGE), Director of Photography Martin Boege (INSTRUCTIONS NOT INCLUDED, THE VIOLIN) and editor Patricia Rommel (THE LIVES OF OTHERS).

Latino Star Gloria Trevi Talks About Her “De Pelicula” U.S. Tour

Gloria Trevi is coming to perform in New York City THIS Sunday. One thing that you can depend on with Gloria is the unexpected. She has been one of the most singular unique Latin acts in history. Well into her second stint of her career, Gloria has not slowed down one bit. She is as vibrant and curious as ever. I was fortunate to speak with Gloria from her Texas home. As she proclaimed at the start of this interview, “I was born ready and I want to learn.”

Coming to New York, Gloria has her favorite things to do. At the top of the list is a love of mass shopping. “I love Saks Fifth Avenue. I just love to buy things there,” Gloria said with her trademark laugh.” The tour is called “De Pelicula” from her album of the same name which brought to mind the question of who she would want to play her she responded coyly, “It would have to be someone who looks like me, I was thinking Angelina Jolie,Gloria joked.

Gloria has been hot in the spotlight for 20 years and there is little that is not known. She thought hard about the question of things not known about her. “That’s a hard question. My fans know more about me and even remind me of things I forget.” Gloria laughs. Even her famous “Zapatos Viejos” (Old shoes) are not in her possession. “I don’t know where it is now. I gave those away to a fan years ago.”

Gloria continues to break barriers like learning a new language. She conducted this interview totally in English, something she is looking to conquer. “I like to joke with people that I am the Trevi-nator,” Gloria beams. “I want to practice and it’s better for me because I want to do an English album next.”

Gloria will be performing at Stage 48 on Sunday, March 23rd. Look for her interview in the upcoming issue of LatinTRENDS Magazine.

Gloria Trevi: Redeemed!

In her new single, “Me Rio de Ti” (I Laugh at You), Mexican diva Gloria Trevi happily belts: “And I spend my time dancing, singing, doing so much with you . . . creating my eternal life with you. And when I remember your name, I laugh at you.”

Through her lyrics, Trevi has candidly chronicled her rise to stardom in the early ’90s as the rebellious “Mexican Madonna.” She became an international icon. She fell from grace. And now she rises again.

Throughout my career I’ve always been like an open book, and very coherent in my [musical] evolution,” says Trevi, who will sit for an exclusive Q&A at the Billboard Latin Music Conference on April 27. “You can dress the monkey in silk, but I’m still that monkey. And I like being how I am.”

Now, at 43, Trevi’s new album, titled “Gloria!,” features the artist in her prime. She has new management: Mexico City-based Westwood Entertainment, which also handles pop group Camila. She’s more than a year into her new marriage to businessman Armando Gomez, with whom she’s raising her two children. And her album-her first studio set for Universal Music Latino-is a priority for the label. This marks the first time a Trevi album will be released simultaneously throughout Latin America, and in digital format in Spain.

New generations are discovering her as a new act, because she was out of sight during much of the 2000s,” says Jesus Lopez, chairman of Universal Music Latin America/Iberian Peninsula. “Gloria was my first new-artist release when I arrived in Mexico [as head of BMG]. And my first to sell over 1 million copies of her debut.”

It’s hard to overstate just how ubiquitous Trevi was in her ’90s heyday. She was her own creation, an iconoclast. She fabricated her own look-torn stockings, wild hair, extravagant outfits-her own choreography, wrote her own songs and articulated what millions of sequestered Mexican girls wanted to say. In her song “Dr. Psiquiatra,” Trevi screamed from a fifth-floor window: “I’m not crazy. I’m just desperate!

Trevi released hit albums in quick succession, sold millions of pin-up calendars, starred in two hit Mexican films and, buoyed by approving editorials from a cadre of Mexican intellectuals, even announced her intention to run for president.

But the avalanche of success came to a grinding halt in 1999 when a former backup singer, Aline Hernandez, wrote a book saying that she and others had been sexually abused and tortured by Trevi and her then-manager, Sergio Andrade. Criminal complaints were filed. Trevi fled to Brazil. She was captured and jailed there in 2000.

Trevi spent four years and eight months in prison, charged with the corruption of minors, rape and kidnapping. In 2002, while in imprisoned in Brazil, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Angel Gabriel. After much speculation, paternity tests confirmed his father was Andrade. Shortly after her son’s birth, Trevi returned to Mexico to face charges. She set up a makeshift recording studio in prison, but on Sept. 21, 2004, she was acquitted on all charges, and freed. She walked out of jail polished, and elegant, clad in a white halter top.

I have my memories, but they’re good memories,” Trevi says now. “I’m the most positive person on the planet and I don’t want to forget the moment I held that little boy in my arms and he gave me back my will to fight. Those are life lessons.”
