On one of my nights out, I encountered a very unique artist by the name of Telmary Diaz. With her eclectic sound influenced by Afro-Caribbean rhythms she captivated the audience during her performance. Her poetic resonance and free spirit composes her music and she really makes a true connection with her audience. Telmary is a Toronto based rapper, musician and spoken-word artist .
Born in Cuba to a journalist her mother and a sociologist her father she initially aspired to seek a career in journalism after her mother. After a friend invited her to a spoken word event, she performed and decided to pursue a different route in expressing her art form. Her pain, pleasure and glory are all manifested through her music and poetry. Determined, she continued her studies in journalism, English language, literature, screenwriting and theater. She devoted herself to helping others heal through her words and music and continues to inspire her fans with her afro-Caribbean sounds.
As her music plays we can hear so many different sounds that compose her songs like samba, son, reggae, mambo and jazz. Telmary comes from a lineage of great musicians, most Cuban artist express the pain of their oppressed country and this artist doesn’t fall short in bringing you to her. Like in the song “Pa que vuelva” where she is yearning her lover to return. Or in the song “Alegria Africana” in which she joyfully recalls her roots and expresses the beauty of being black. Telmary is a great performer. With her live band she demands attention and should be exalted. Her shows are never disappointing and she involves the crowd in her moves. Telmary is a pioneer who has brought a new sound to her self proclaimed genre. She is surely an act to follow, one of Toronto’s best kept secret.
