Walter Mercado, the legendary astronomer’s career as an astrologer began in 1969, when a guest did not show up for an appearance on a Telemundo program, according to CNN affiliate WIPR. A testament to Walter’s ability and charisma is the fact that he was even able to penetrate the machismo that exist within the Latin culture. He also turned the world of mysticism and some of the taboo that came with it, into a pop culture phenomenon.
He left Univision in 2010 and later wrote a horoscope column for El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish sister newspaper of The Miami Herald. In 2015, he launched his website where his fans could listen to their horoscope as well as ask him questions.
For many of his key years he delivered his daily horoscopes on Univision’s “Primer Impacto.” His audience anxiously awaited his end-of-year forecasts, which gave them insights into the upcoming new year.
Mercado, who went on to become Latin America’s most celebrated psychic and an international phenomenon. At his height in the mid 80’s to 90’s, he delivered daily horoscopes to an estimated 120 million viewers in the U.S. and Latin America.
His empire extended to books, radio, and a syndicated newspaper column. Walter Mercado’s super power was that attracted and developed an audience of people that were not into astrology and the horoscopes, this audience was more attracted to his persona and his appeal.
Education
Walter was an educated man, he majored in pedagogy, psychology, and pharmacy at the University of Puerto Rico.
He used the skills he learned to help others understand the human mind and how to use medicinal plants. He also studied modern and classical ballet. Walter was also a flamenco dancer, before his career as an astrologer took off, he was a very successful dancer in Puerto Rico.
He was a theater actor and also starred in Puerto Rican telenovelas. He was in “Un adiós en el recuerdo” and “Larga distancia”, additionally he taught dramatic arts at his very own school called Walter Actors Studio 64. Mercado spoke six languages; English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Greek.

Sexuality
People often wondered about Walter’s sexuality, but he never felt the need to label it. “I have sexuality with the wind, the flowers, the garden,” Walter said in the Netflix documentary Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado. “I don’t need a person to make me happy.”

Rise and fall
Mercado’s manager Bill Bakula helped make Walter a household name, turning him into “the prophet of the New Age,” Bakula said.
Bakula, in his own words, says that he helped Mercado cross over into the general market in Europe and then the United States, thanks in part to well calculated appearances in shows such as; Howard Stern, Sally Jessy Raphael and others.
But Bakula was also Mercado’s downfall. In 1995, Mercado signed a contract that gave Bakula’s company full rights to his name, image, likeness, and work, plunging Mercado into a six-year court battle.
One line of the agreement read “The territory shall be the universe,” which presumably included the astral plane, he had the rights to the galaxy! Two days after Mercado finally won back his brand, he had a heart attack and almost died.
On November 2, 2019, Mercado passed away reportedly from kidney failure, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, He was 87. He is buried at Señorial Memorial Park in Cupey barrio, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

New Biopic Coming
Eugenio Derbez’s 3Pas Studios and A Really Good Home Pictures are teaming with the estate of the late entertainer, Shanti LLC, to develop scripted and unscripted programming based on Walter Mercado’s cultural influence and status as an icon within the Latino community and LGBTQ+ communities.
Mercado’s story Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado, was released in 2020 by Netflix’s.
It shows how he started out as a dancer and actor in his native Puerto Rico and became a local TV personality after sharing astrological predictions in his signature robes and capes and would go on to become a cultural personality.
His astrological shows also aired for decades in Latin America and the United States.

“I can think of no better partners than 3Pas Studios and A Really Good Home Pictures to present Walter’s life to the generations that loved him and those to come,” said Theodore B. Gekis, who manages Mercado’s estate and will oversee all projects that come through the deal.
“Although Walter has passed on, his message about self-empowerment, self-acceptance and our interconnectedness with the universe live on in humankind and need to be celebrated daily.
Love, spirituality, generosity and goodwill are universal, and become more and more relevant with each passing day. Walter was a man ahead of his time, and the time has come for the rest of us to catch up with him.”
Gekis will exec produce any and all potential projects alongside Derbez and his 3Pas Studios’ Ben Odell and Sonia Almanza Gambaro. ARGHP’s Andy Fraser and Katie Politanoff will oversee for the company.
