NO
Starring Gael García Bernal
Based on the True Story of a Marketing Campaign That Sparked a Revolution
Coming to Blu-ray™ and DVD June 25th
Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards®, NO debuts on Blu-ray™ and DVD June 25th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, which won the Cannes Film Festival’s 2012 Art Cinema Award and was the Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival 2012 and Telluride Film Festival 2012is based on the true story surrounding the 1988 referendum on Augusto Pinochet’s presidency in Chile.
Facing international pressure to legitimize his dictatorship, Pinochet created a national plebiscite giving the citizens of Chile the opportunity to vote for or against extending his rule. Starring Gael García Bernal (Rudi Y Cursi, The Motorcycle Diaries) as a young advertising executive brought in to spearhead the opposition’s “NO” campaign, the film is a smart and insightful, yet humorous look at how the people of Chile had an opportunity to end a dictatorship at the ballot box.
In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote “YES” or “NO” to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the “NO” persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free from oppression.
NO was directed by Pablo Larraín. The film was produced by Juan De Dios Larraín and Daniel Dreifuss. Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King served as executive producers.
