The communist country is going to get an upgrade in its, compared to the U.S., inferior, Internet services. “A specialized ship began laying fiber-optic cable under the Caribbean Sea from Venezuela toward Cuba this past weekend, launching a $70 million project to connect the communist island nation with better phone and Internet service. Internet access in Cuba currently has to go through satellites to get around U.S. embargo restrictions, which ends up being costly and slow”, stated AOL News. Venezuela and Cuba are going to split the bill of the costs. “The new fiber -optic cable is being laid by a French-flagged ship from the company Alcatel-Lucent.” This can greatly get Cuba, if you will, up to speed with the media. Cuban scientists however, emphasized this will probably not change the amount and kind of information allowed in the strict island. The Internet is expected to be ready for consumer use sometime this summer. The cable will not only connect to Venezuela, but Jamaica as well. Censorship will still be enforced in Cuba, but hey, now whatever little information you can find will be no later than dinnertime instead of the next morning!
