
Alberto Iglesias, Spain’s most acclaimed composer, won his tenth Goya Award for his score of famed director Pedro Almodovar’s film “The Skin I Live In,” starring Antonio Banderas. With his win, Iglesias is the first artist in history to receive 10 Goya Awards. The Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars, were handed out February 19 in Madrid.
“I am incredibly humbled to receive this great honor,” said Iglesias. “I have so much admiration and respect for my fellow nominees, colleagues and members of the film academy. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.”
Iglesias is currently an Oscar nominee for Tomas Alfredson’s critically-acclaimed motion picture, “Tinker Tailor Solider Spy.” The spy thriller, based on the John le Carre classic, has received rave reviews around the globe. Previously, Iglesias has received Academy Award nominations for Fernando Meirelles’ “The Constant Gardener” and Marc Foster’s “The Kite Runner.” He has received numerous BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations throughout his career, and won the European Film Award for Best Original Score and the World Soundtrack Award for Composer of the Year for Almodovar’s “Volver.”
His classical studies included piano, guitar, electronic music and composition. His work has been performed in concert halls around the world and he has written several notable ballets for renowned choreographer Nacho Duato and the Spanish National Dance Company. His concert pieces include “Cautiva,” “Tabulae,” “Cero Sobre Cero,” “Self” and “In the Land of the Lemon Trees.”
