The trend of plastic surgery is as old as time itself. Sushruta, who lived in the 6th century, was a renowned surgeon of ancient India, who is also known as the father of plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery.
Prior to him, however, archaeologists have found evidence of plastic surgery taking place in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Babylon (modern day Iran and Iraq).
In recent years, increasing numbers of Americans are choosing to have their cosmetic surgery abroad, with Brazil being one of the top choices
for the discerning plastic surgery enthusiast.
Celebrities, too, are getting in on the craze – supermodel Naomi Campbell is rumored to have had her recent nose job while enjoying the sunny beaches of Rio – and the trend has become so prevalent that NBC’s The Today Show has taken notice. “Americans are heading overseas, combining a cosmetic surgery with a vacation, in record numbers,” said Peter Greenberg, travel editor for The Today Show.
There are a number of factors which have contributed to this rapid growth in cosmetic surgery abroad, outside of merely the financial
considerations. Firstly, due to an increasing access to information, there is a growing understanding of the high standards of cosmetic surgeons overseas, where standards are comparable with those found in the United States.
